I want a simple rifle that many of you have and probably our fathers had. It's simple: 7mm Rem Mag, Wood Stock, and most importantly -BLUED barrel. They are all using matte these days and I despise matte finishes. I think they look cheap and show the tiniest of scratches and imperfections. The only one's I can find with blued barrels are Weatherby Mark V, Model 70, (both expensive for me) and sadly I don't see the affordable Remington BDL anymore on their site. It seems it's the pricey CDL in this design. So I guess is there a way to get matte blued?

Oops, then apparently it was the CDL that I liked but the price went way up than what it was when I looked last year, thus I thought it was a different rifle

If you can find the BDL new it would be the same price as a CDL. Remington discontinued the BDL a few years ago and replaced it with the CDL. The CDL is just an older more classic style stock compared to the modernistic BDL style stock that Remington introduced n the 60's in an effort to copy the Weatherby style.

Remington had a lot of complaints from folks who still want the BDL style stock so they have brought them back in limited numbers. They sell for the same price as the CDL however.

If you were alittle flexible in your caliber, I think you could pretty easily find a Remington M700 BDL or ADL to suite you. I saw a BDL a while back (as new) with a cheap scope on it for $300 in 270 win at a gunshop.

The bluing on the Savage "classic" series is pretty nice. Terrific wood stocks as well.

Thanks guys. I'm looking for new, and quite fond of the 7mm Rem caliber. Looks like I'm going to have to shell out big bucks for the right rifle, I guess back in the day when blued was the only option it was much easier. Also how is the barrel to stock fit of the 700's and Win Model 70's? Are there huge gaps between it or one-sided like the Savages?

I looked at quite a few new Model 70s (LW and Sporters mostly and a few Super Grades). All except one had very nicely floated barrels. One LW I saw did have the barrel lightly touching on one side.

Hmm. The Vanguard's and Mossberg 4x4's fit perfectly tight in the stock, but alas they are matte lol. I did have a 4x4 when they first came out in 30-06, laminate wood, and stainless barrel and it was one of my favorite rifles, just not a 7mm. I took a doe ear through ear at 100 yds once and I shake bad.

A Weatherby Vanguard Deluxe could be just what you are looking for. New ones are still out there if you do a little shopping. Just a quick edit to update. Look on GunsAmerica site they have a nib right now with some very nice photos. Let us know what you think.

If you ever plan to reload your own ammo...take a quick look at a .284 Winchester cartridge...short action...7mm bullet...very close in performance to a 7 Rem mag

I checked out the vanguard deluxe but didn't see a 7mm, and they are about the same as the Model 70 price wise. guess i'll have to double up or deal with it

Just me but I think classic deer rifles start and stop with the Savage M99, which is only available as a used gun now. There are others if you don't like levers and GunBroker has a good supply of both.

How about a ruger mark 2? rugged, blued, and pretty. Plenty used available and in 7mm

M77? I though that's all they were now. I really considered them but I hear tons of bashing on Ruger bolt actions rifles in the accuracy department. Key word being "heard", not what I know.

yea the older 77 mark 2 are plentiful used. The new model "hawkeyes" are great but are not blued. Its not really a matte finish either though. Dont bash it till you look at one. There accuracy is plenty good for hunting. Its no bench rifle, but shoots way better than the critics give them credit for. If you dont mind a used gun, the mark 2's are great. If looking for new chech out the m77 hawkeyes. You shouldnt be disapointed ;)

By the way remingtons products are not what they used to be. There quality control is crap and the guns are way overpriced for what you get. You can get more for your money in my opinion than remington

I just went looking myself. I found out that if I was gonna get what I wanted, it was gonna cost me big. I chose to save my spare change and deal with ugly guns for a little while longer.

Mine will me a Model 70...

Frozen North- I'm with you on that one. I'm thinking I'll save and wait for the Model 70 Sporter myself. I have an old Model 94 30-30 in the safe handed down by my father. I love Winchester guns.

True Grit- Yes, 2. One being the Wally World Model 70 Shadow (synthetic), and a Savage synthetic model not sure what designation (110, 111, etc). I'm just ready for a classic style that will be handed down to my sons.

The Hawkeye is blued. It is just a matte finish blue vs polished blue. Lots of used MK-II's out there with polished blue if that is a must. Read a rumor a few weeks ago that Ruger may be offering the polished blue later this year. Just a rumor, I cannot confirm that.

If you want polished blue and walnut I'd go with a new Winchester Featherweight and look no further.
