Single-action Holster suggestions

I'm getting a 4 5/8" .357 Blackhawk. I'd like a holster that will work well for a backup sidearm while hunting. At the same time, it'd be good if I could also carry it concealed, if wanted.

...and inexpensive quality is always good! Willing to consider kydex or other materials. It doesn't have to look like a cowboy rig.

The number of holsters you can get is endless, but for field use get one that can be worn cross-draw. That will put the revolver on the side away from whatever shotgun or rifle you are carrying and the two won't bump into each other.

Also be sure it has a secure safety strap. Quick draw is unlikely to be an issue here.
 
I have a Bianchi Lawman holster I'll give you if you think it will suit your needs.
Tan leather, carries high, RH draw with snap down strap, used but servicable. I used it with a Colt SAA 4 3/4" and I think your Ruger 4 5/8" will fit it.

That does look like a nice holster. That's very kind of you, Mr. Curry. If you don't need it, I'd be thankful for it. I may get to use it for a day or two while I'm down on leave. :)

I use a Mitch Rosen "Sport" model for my Ruger SA's and love it. Very comfortable for all day carry and allows easy concealability at the same time. I'm guessing it's more than you'd consider inexpensive but like guns, with holsters, you get what you pay for.

But be sure his .357 Blackhawk isn't one made on the .44 frame, because if it is the holster likely won't fit. If it is one of the new .357 Blackhawk Commemoratives or an Old Model (3-screw) it might, although the topstrap on the Blackhawk is much thicker then the one on a Colt SAA.
 
I found a 2000 John Taffin article that said the shorter barrel length .357s are made on the smaller frame.

Don't think so. When Ruger went to the the New Model Blackhawks with the transfer bar safety they standardized on one frame size. Thereafter all Blackhawks from .30 Carbine to .45 Colt were made on the .44 Magnum sized frame. Recently though they went in the other direction and came out with a commemorative edition of their original .357 Blackhawk, but with current improvements. All of this would be a moot point except it can effect holster fit.
 
As far as fit, Ruger's website offers a Galco holster that:
"Fits Vaquero, New Vaquero, Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk and 50th Anniversary New Model Blackhawk with 4 5/8" barrel"...which seems to say these are all pretty similar in size.

The Bianchi model mentioned is a very practical and versatile rig. Another, and my personal favorite, is the old "Tom Threepersons" design from El Paso Saddlery. A "classic" for many years, for many reasons.

The El Paso holster is a true custom item, in that there are many options such as belt size, angle, retention method (none, strap, hammer thong) color, "decoration" (tooling, carving, etc.), and lining. Quality is absolutely first-rate and, if your tastes are simple, prices are very comparable to Big Maker Factory items of similar quality. The main advantage is that you can get it exactly the way you want it.
