Sig P220 "Evolution" -- major changes -- good or bad?

I got the following note from SigArms this morning -- not sure yet how I feel about it!

The P220 Evolution Revolution <emphasis mine>

The SIG SAUER® P220 is the pistol that ushered in the DA/SA era and is widely (and rightfully) considered the most accurate out-of-the-box 45 available. With a reputation for accuracy, durability and reliability it is no wonder the P220 is so popular. But December 2005 is the dawning of a new era in the history of the P220. Since it's introduction the P220 was produced with a carbon steel 2-piece slide (like the P228 and P225). Not anymore. Today the P220 features a stainless steel slide with a Nitron® finish and gone is the carbon steel. Additionally, our team of industry leading engineers completed work on the DAK™ trigger for the P220. You can now get this revolutionary double-action only trigger in the P220 in addition to the P226, P229 and P239 models.

That's just part of the new P220 story. Right now, our engineers, in cooperation with their counterparts at our sister company J.P. Sauer & Sohn are doing the final work on a single-action only version of the P220. Imagine the reliability and accuracy of a P220 in a "cocked & locked" configuration.

The final step in the rebirth of the P220 is a "commander" sized version featuring a 3.9" barrel and shorter slide. Yes, you read correctly. This new model (designated the P240) is currently under development in our top secret engineering lab and is expected to debut at SHOT Show...but you heard it here first.

The new stainless slide, a DAK™ trigger, an SAO trigger and "commander" sized model are all evidence of the continued evolution of one of the greatest pistols ever made. To have them all at one time is nothing short of an evolution revolution. Viva La Revolution!

My take? This is all part of spooling up for the JCP. Look at who they just picked as a new CEO. Many changes in the works at Sig to try and capture this, and other contracts IMHO...

One benefit of the folded 220 slide (when compared to the ST model) is weight. My 220ST is bedside and range, my 220 is for VM-2 IWB carry. If the new 220 has an ST slide, my carry gun just gained a little holiday spread...but then again, it won't be prone to corrosion the way it used to be before going to Tripp.

I will get one of the SAO models when it becomes available. SIG has been great at introducing a lot of "flavors" of it guns in the last two years. A lot of the changes have been largely cosmetic, others like the DAK system have been great enhacements.

I think a SAO P220 is going to sell like hotcakes, since most people cannot afford the P226 X-FIVE SAO models that go for over 2k.

There is a lot of discussion of the P220 SA and the P240 commanderoid on sigforum.com
And there are less expensive versions of the X-5 on the way; the SO ("Tactical" to us impressionable colonials) which saves hundreds without the elaborate position-adjustable trigger and custom Nil grips. Still pretty expensive, but no more than a medium-fancy 1911.

I have been calling for this for years. If they had done it sooner they could have saved themselves the dead end of tryng to wedge the GSR 1911 clone into an already crowded market.

(yawn)

A single action P220? I consider it a solution in search of a problem. Now, I do like the idea of the one-piece stainless slide, although I haven't seen an older slide fail, and I like the onesie on my P229 just fine, as do I the twosie on my P220 and P225.

a 3.9 inch slide on a P220/P240? Could be interesting. I never considered the regular P220 to be too huge, though. Seems like it's already kind of Commander sized.

I don't begrudge SIG for trying to make a buck and be creative. I encourage it. I own a bunch of their stuff, myself.

Regards,
Rabbit.

I own a stamped steel slide version,

And I will own both the stainless steel slide version as well as the Single action only version.

I really am a Sig nut!

More is always better!!!!!

I like Nitron stainless slides. However, I will say that on alloy framed SIG's those with the stamped steel slides are better balanced. For example, my 228 feels better in my hand than my 229R. The 229 simply feels a tad "top heavy" to me since the slide is so much heavier than the aluminum frame.

Well.......its about time, you see theyve been paying attention to what CZ did with the 97B! :neener: Kidding........Aladan put your gun down! te he he.

Id LOVE an SA version of the 220 and from the sound of it, all of them in the future will have the SS Slide.......Jeep, youll only have to buy one gun.

Nice.....Sig is listening to the public and doing what we want them to do.....
Very cool.

Shoot well.

Jeep, youll only have to buy one gun

Where's the fun in that?

I still need to get an all stainless 220 too.

I really need to get on the 220 buying. These darn 226's have taken too much of my money!

I can wait until SHOT to check these out in person!

I was reading this from a monthly newsletter I get from Sig. Interesting ideas they have for the P220.

I am a SIGnificant dealer, those are supposed to be available end of this month, the 1st 250 will be a special production run that are marked first run, they are also making the 220 in the new DAK trigger as well, very nice trigger on these.
Anyone want one?
contact me for price.

I thought the DA/SA era was ushered in by the Webley, and eventually the P.38...

Imagine the reliability and accuracy of a P220 in a "cocked & locked" configuration.
I tried, and I came up with this...

And the practical difference between that and a properly set up 1911 is?
...most sub-$800 1911s aren't set up properly. Not flaming, just the truth. The cheapest ones I'd stake my life on are the S&W, and even they run around $900 around here.

Not to mention, there's just a different feel and contour to the Sig. As much as I like my 1911s, I've always found Sigs to be more ergonomic. The slide-release on Sigs is much easier to use one-handed.

The 240 looks interesting, and I've already got a 245, and I hate rails. It does bother me that Sig seems to be going rail-only on their newer guns.
