Single Barrel Shotgun for Defense

Honestly..

I would recommend a gun like that only to somebody who has zero gun experience, is not a gun person, has very little money to spend, and needs a HD gun ASAP.

The ease of operation can't be beat. It is IMO especially good for females who might have trouble running the bolt on a pump. Then again, a DB would be better for this same person for a little more money.

The best low cost shotgun option for a person willing to learn or who already has some knowledge IMO is a new maverick or used mossberg pump.

Around here, the used mossberg pump is much easier to find than a DB in decent shape. Singles are around, but you can't swing a dead cat w/o hitting a used mossberg 500. Used 870s are nowhere to be found. They must go quick.

i just posted pretty much this same advice in a different post. check your local laws first. here, a loaded shotgun in a car will get you jail time. even with a cpl. and by the way, i dont think a single shot anything is a good idea for self defense. unless it is all you have at that instant. planing to use a single shot is in my opinion, a mistake.

moooose, as I have posted in another thread :))), great advice on checking out local laws. Where I live, it's no big deal - even a handgun in the glove box.

:D

Seems like a built in disadvantage, to me. I'd look for a used pump, myself, but there's nothing really wrong with an old single. What you have to consider is that you're going to have to practice with it, and you're going to have to figure out some way to carry ammo for it. Repeaters carry ammo inside them, so that's not really such an issue.

In my own case, for example, I can stuff a SxS about as fast as anyone you'll be likely to meet. There might be ten people in the country faster. I still use a pump or auto for social situations though. For one thing, I tend not to wear a shotgun shell belt everywhere I go. Speed takes a dramatic hit when you're trying to stuff shells out of your pocket, in the dark, in the rain, when you're shaking. Much easier to pump the handle, or flick the safety, and let the gun worry about loading itself until the immediate situation's been dealt with.
