I am looking for a single-shot 30-30 rifle, for target shooting. I reload. The bottle-neck, tapered, rimmed round appeals...I see H & R has a single-shot 30-30 in their line.... also Savage 219s are available on Gunbroker. Are the 219s any good ? I'd load mild cartridges at most... Any other suggestions ? Thanks, George

35 years ago.My first rifle was a hand me down ,break open, single shot 30/30/ I believe it was a Savage.
It was a nice rifle.
I had it about 4 years. I remember vaporizing pigeons that would land on the roof of the old abandon barn we had down the road. We had some pines about 50 yards away. & would use it as a blind, nice branch for a rest, the eyes of adolescent. They didnt stand much of a chance.

I recently acquired a Savage 219. I have only fired 3 rounds (Rem corelokt) out of it and I am VERY happy with the results.:D It's light, very sleek and the perceived recoil seems to be half that of my Win. mod 94. I believe that it was born circa 1937-38.
I've handled (not shot) several of the H&R single shot rifles and while they are very affordable and more available, the Savage's hammerless sleek lines, 26" barrel and overall quality of build makes it #1 in MY "fun gun" category. I wish Savage would re-introduce this great little rifle. ALSO, it came with an additional 12ga (mod 220) 29" barrel. Several other caliber/barrels were also manufactured, I hope to nab one in 22 Hornet one day.

Bearhands: Thanks for the info.... I incline toward old guns, anyway... the lines of the Savage 219 are far more appealing than the stubby H & R guns.... please let me know as you shoot your 219, how you like it... accurate ? George

i found a ruger number 3 in 30-40 krag at a show for 500.00 like new.i have not gotten to play with it yet, but i should be able to load it from 30 carbine thru 308 velocity with no problems. could be the way to go if you can find one. eastbank.

George,

For what it's worth........... the first shot I took w/ my "new" 70+ yr old open sighted rifle was a "it might blow up so i'll point it at the target and look away shot".... After being pleasantly surprised with the recoil and the fact that the shot was ON the target, the next two shots were 2" apart in the black @ 50 yds. It was then that I decided it was going to be a shooter! I am anxious to reload some spire points for it and see how accurate *I* can be. I'll report results to you.
*note: I too, love the older guns, we're no doubt from the same "era".
