Shot the Henry 357 and CVA Scout 44 today at 100 yards. Neither one like the loads that are go-to for my handguns. Gas checked wheelweight metal gets 5” out of my Super and 29-2. (429445). 358156 works great in Blackhawks, 686, and Security Six.
The rifles showed a preference for jacketed stuff.
Next, more gc but sized to .430 and .358. Also, some good jacketed stuff. And a better scope on Hank.
Best 357 group for 5 was five inches with flex tips. Best 44, about six.
My lever guns will beat that.

Ya, sounds like it may take a bit of work to find the bullet/power charge combo that falls in their accuracy wheelhouse.

Guns can be a lot like English cars. Even if you have two identical models that were produced sequentially, both are going to be completely individual with regards to tuning for optimum performance. It’s just through trial and error (and luck) that the right combo of tweaking and massaging is found. ;)

Good luck! Let us know how your quest for accuracy happiness goes. :)

Stay safe.

I picked up a CVA Scout in 44 Mag. little while ago.

My first outing was horrible.
It turned out that the scope dropped out of the game.
I like the old Weavers from the El Paso days.
I pick them up cheap when I run across them. Looks like this one wasn't a bargain. LOL

I was truly getting terrible groups. I thought my Hornady was grouping nice, so I went to zero it in on the bull.
Well..... Things went down hill from there.

Saturday Report:
I put on a confirmed good piece of glass and took two flavors of Factory Ammo out.

I set the target in close at 25 yards.

Six rounds of Buffalo 240/gr FMJFP
I couldn't bribe someone to state that what they saw would even remotely be considered a group.
The horizontal stringing was baffling.

Next: Hornady LeverEvolution 225/gr FTX
I stopped at four rounds.
They all went into one ragged hole.

Good News: The rifle isn't garbage.
Bad News: It's looking like it's going to be picky picky picky when it comes to ammo.
Worse News: I have 1,000 rounds of the Buffalo.
Good News: I have a Ruger 44 Mag.

Not to hi jack the thread, but #1's and "single shot disappointment" evidently is or was a thing. This rifle from '74 was sent back soon after purchase and rebarreled by Ruger, because it wouldn't shoot well.

I have one of those made in the early '70's in the same caliber. It gave me best ever 100 yard group beating my 223 G2 Contender by a few thousands of an inch. I remember the measurement of the Contender because it came first and it was .297" for a 3 shot group. I only shoot 3 shot groups with single shot rifles for two reasons. If you miss with the first you MIGHT manage a second shot but never a third that will do any good. The other is that the group starts to climbing vertically after the third shot or least that has been the case with my rifles. I have also found that getting the rest as close as possible to the action improves the group size.

I have no experience with the two rifles in the OP. I did have a Handi-Rifle in 223 for a time. It was so bad I'll just pass on any comments.

My pistol caliber long guns rarely like the rounds that are most accurate in my hand guns. “Like” as in accuracy.

I often hunt with my CVA Scout in 44 MAG. Best ammo I've found for it is by Hornady's Lever-evolution featuring a 225 grain jacketed bullet. Two inch groups at 100 yards are the best it will do for me. This bullet performs very well for deer and wild hog hunting producing large wound channels through the chest organs. - TR

Awhile ago I bought a CVA Scout in 444M to replace a 336-444 I had sold. The first shots thru it was with 3 different bullets using 2 different powders. All loads hit between .800" and 1.200" at 100 yds. I can't get my favorite 444M powder so I was trying to find a replacement. Except for velocity it really made no difference.
