I was watching "Whitetails" tonight and saw Larry Weishuhn, who was hunting with a T/C pistol in .30-06. I know he likes those handguns. I have always had an interest in those guns but wondered two things...

1. What is the recoil of a round like the .308 or .30-06 in a handgun? Does the decreased velocity make it like shooting a .44 mag? .454?

2. What is the velocity of a round like that out of a handgun? What's the effective range?

I watched a show where he took a whitetail with a T/C handgun in .30-30. I assume that the .30-30 in a 10" barrel couldn't be as effective as the .44 magnum...??

Thanks!!

My XP-100 is in 7mm BR - that recoil, while not brutally punishing, is still stout - and that is lighter than any 308 - the effective range of mine is 250 yards

I have a T/C Contender in .30-30, and I find it to be quite pleasant to shoot, but then I'm only going through 20 rounds in a sitting. The same gun with it's .45-70 barrel on it is punishing, though, like a large firecracker going off in your hand. That is unless you use the 405 grain popgun loads, then it's no worse than .44 mag.

Thanks for the comments. I just saw an old Sierra Handgun manual that list velocity for loads with 10" contender barrels for most bottleneck cartridges. I'll have to take a closer look.

With a good brake installed, most of the bigger calibers can be tamed down enough to be pleasant to shoot. Unbraked bbls firing 30-06 and it's like are going to be a handful for those that only occasionally fire them.

If you use a good brake on a single-shot specialty pistol you can shoot about anything your heart desires-I even have a 338 Lapua Improved center-grip XP-100. Extreme? Yes, but it even has a rifle scope on it:evil:

You will approximately 308 rifle performance out of 30-06 15" SP.
A lot of the cartridges I shoot have around the 06 capacity or more.

BRL

I bought a T/C encore .30/06 last fall. I put a 2x6 Bushnell on it. Its a heavy gun and hard to steady without a rest or some shooting sticks. That said its a cool gun and packs a lot of power. Cant wait to take it on the deer stand with me this fall. Not sure how many feet per sec I am getting. I got the blued / walnut version. Its a real well made gun.

You actually don't lose that much FPS in 14-15" pistols compared to rifles... 150-200 FPS is about all and sometimes not that much, depends on caliber..

I have a Gary Reeder Custom Encore in 300win mag W/muzzle brake. For me it's a joy to shoot. Loud for anyone nearby and about 5 feet of flame LOL. I shot it over sky screens and it was going about 2200 fps. As a comparison same load from my 24" Win. Mod 70 was about 3100 fps.

What powder and bullet weight?
What barrel length on your Reeder barrel?

I have a TC Contnder and shooting it is pleasure I have a 7-30 waters its no 30-06 cacacity it based on the 30-30 case. I also have a 30-30 super 14 and the recoil is stouter than the 7-30 with factory ammo. That will change when I start to reload for it.

I have a Savage Striker in 308 and while the recoil is pretty stout it is manageable, my T/C SSK Industries Contender in 375JDJ is another matter, this one does have quite a recoil factor but is still ok if you know what is coming..lol

Time to mention Lone Eagles

My MRI-swiss cheese-braked .30-06 L.E. is no rougher than +p.45 in a 1911-style iron pistol. Tiny bit more of a jolt, but back on target just as quickly. Of course the actual "follow-up" second shot takes a bit more time than just a trigger-pull, but it is back on point very quickly. Now ... I have located an early SSP barrel in .444 Marlin Hornady Leverevolution, 2½" case with a 265 gr FTX bullet.-- a huge not-bottle-necked cavern from breech to muzzle! I'm having the barrel threaded and a QD brake machined on before I even think of shooting it! I'm hoping that teh .444 charge won't blow the brake clean off the barrel

My 375JDJ is based on the 444 Marlin case necked down to .375, 15" barrel with a muzzle break also...
