I was thinking about getting a single-shot, just for fun! My wife of course says, "you already have a shotgun why would you want another?" I just give her a look that says, "so....?" She's good, she just kind of shakes her head at me. :)

What are good single shots? Gauge does not matter. I'd like it to be fairly inexpensive. Any suggestions?

I perfer single-shots for rabbits

I perfer single-shots for rabbits and have found that I shot more accurately with them, purely because I had to take that little more care to hit it with the one and only round that I had. I also like double barrel, but IMHO, single-shot shotguns are awesome. Because I do so like single shots, even in rifles, I suggest Thompson/Center:

i think you can get H&R's or NEF's at wal-mart for $100. its good enough for fun, kicks some though.

I picked up a few pre-68 single shot shotguns for $100 total. :D

Think about going the used route.

I have duckhunted off and on when by myself on one other guy with a single shot. I fine that I do not kill any fewer birds, shoot fewer shells, and have a heck of a time doing it like grandpa did. In small towns in the Arkansas Delta, decades ago anything besides a single shot was an anomoly because of a severe lack of money.

I find it helps connect me with "the old ways."

If you live in an area with a fair number of pawnshops (as I do), you might want to drop in and see if any of them are overstocked with H&R and NEF single-shots. I'd avoid getting any off-brands or really decrepit ones; I picked up two almost-new H&R shotguns for $75 for both, OTD.

If I'd really felt like it, I could probably have picked up all six of their recent-vintage H&Rs for about $200, but I don't really want to stack them like kindling.

Or if your time is more valuable than that, just buy one for under $100 new.

Everyone should have a single or six to back up their 870s.

Lots of use for the money.

Besides economy, the little singles have the appeal of being the minimal shotgun possible. Nothing less is a shotgun.

A couple caveats.....

Many old singles are built on iron frames and with barrels of softer steel than that used today. Many have been used extensively and cleaned/maintained haphazardly.

Light loads are mandatory. Touch off a short mag in one of these and learn why PDQ

Oft older singles are also chambered for cartridges shorter than we have now, especially in 16 gauge.

As with all old firearms, a good smith should go over it before firing.

Even with all this, there's something special about easing through a hardwood grove with a few shells in a pocket, a light single and one's eyes on the canopy.

Or, taking your latest bird with a shotgun like the one with which you took your first.

HTH.....

The lil' single shot has quite the following around here especially the NEF/HR 20 ga. Youth model.

Do a search and you'll find a ton of stuff on the Youth.

Connect with history

So true! A single shot says a lot about a person. It says confident, patient, precise. Sure athe autos are nice as are the pumps. But, I too agree, the good old single-shot takes ma way back to borrowing my aunt's .22LR over 20 guage Savage. Those were the days. Today, these sell for (I think) for nearly $550.00 in my area. The reason I prefer the T/C is the high grade steel and interchanging barrel.

This is a great thread! Thanks for starting it.

Hey, update! I bought a NEF single shot in 12 gauge. I like the thing! Alot. :) It's light, swings easily and just seems to be an all round fun gun...

what do you guys do with your single shots? I was thinking about taking it to the range to shoot trap with it this weekend...methinks I'll get some raised eyebrows:D , what do you think?

Single Shot Spartan

I shoot trap with an $89 Remington Spartan 12ga. I'm up to 21/25. That's better than some of the guys I shoot with who have high dollar guns.

I like single shots. The light weight, the simplicity. They remind me of hunting in the woods with my Dad, when I was a boy (he with a pump and me with a single shot 12). I remember doing a lot of experimenting with that single, when I was a kid.

I like the NEF guns. I've thought of getting a 12 ga. barrel for my T/C Encore, but I think I would still rather use the NEFs, instead.

(Actually, I do more looking at the single shots, than shooting them. I most always use an 870 or a semi auto.)

They are still fun, though.

Ithaca SuperSingle 66 in 20!

Looks like a toy lever action. Shoots nice and locks up tighter than a real shotgun.

Encore vent rib barrels, while very nice, are over $300, and you wouldn't want to throw the thing under the seat. I'd say NEF/H&R, or the old Ithaca, and used if possible.

Of course, my trap gun is also a single shot. Different sort of animal, though.

Single shots!!!

I have an OLD Iver Johnson single shot that I bought about 35 yrs. ago for $20. I had a huge amount of 1/4 inch steel ball bearings that I was going to reload and shoot out of this old beast. But after puting on and old GI black recoil pad if found that I can shoot this shotgun better than any other I've ever had!!! Fits me perfectly!!! :)
It now lives in my pick-up along with a mixed assortment of shot shells. Always there when I need a shotgun. Couldn't bring my self to shoot the ball bearings out of it!!!:)

After I sold my Nova, picked up an NEF 410. What a hoot. Nice, crisp light trigger and a real natural feel. Somehow got a 24 in trap with it.:what:

I've since bought another in 20 ga, but recoil is more brutal and adding a recoil pad messes up the ergo's in my opinion. I shoot better with the 410. Just wish the ammo wasn't so darn expensive!:barf:

It's amazing to watch all the turkey hunting shows on TV. The hunter 99% of the time is using an semi-auto shotgun. The turkey is always killed with a single shot. Who are these guys fooling? Is there a militant turkey out there somewhere? Is this just an excuse to buy a $1200 camo Benelli?

B.D.,

You misunderstood my post. I wasn't talking about motorcycle riders (or bikers), I was making a joke about "militant turkeys", hence the "motorcycle jackets", etc. In other words, evidently an ill-attempt at humor, regarding ACTUAL wild turkeys (birds). It was a joke...
