OK, this is during WW II. At 1:09 Lt. Tom Quigley talks about how First Sergeant Umberger shot a flintlock dueling pistol. He used the charges from 3 45 ACP cartridges, used toilet paper as wadding and wadded up a 45 bullet with toilet paper and fired it (and missed).

Dueling pistols never made it home.

Most of the First Sergeants I ran into during my Army days were smarter than that. Catman is right. God wasn't done with him here on this earth.

A first sergeant should have more sense otherwise he shouldn't be a 1st sgt. in the first place.

My boss, a battleship navy vet, loaded a nice Whitney shotgun with powder and shot from a .410 shell. Don't know where he got the cap.
It blew out the nipple and knocked the hammer clear off the gun. He found the pieces and put them in a tobacco sack which got lost over the decades.
Too bad, the gun was not otherwise damaged.
I referred him to the local gunsmith but nothing ever happened. I don't know if Boss never called or Smith declined to fool with it.
