Because this hasn't had three threads created for it in the past two days...

Richard Fitzpatrick, a physicist at the University of Texas told MSN:

This story seems rather suspicious.None of the news reports give any details of the calculation. None of the people who hailed Shouryya Ray as a genius are scientists, and none of them give the impression that they have seen the calculation in question. It is impossible to gauge the scientific merit of the calculation until it is made public.

It's a school project, none of it has been published in an accredited scientific journal (ie, peer-reviewed)... and it may never be.

I saw what purports to be the formula in some photographs behind Ray. From that, and some descriptions in the various popular news media it appears to be a Taylor Series expansion. There was also some talk about what phase space the calculation was done in.

Assuming it's even remotely correct, he may have traded one intractable, unsolvable problem for another.

Slow news day I guess.

(Add: I'm disturbed that both of the threads I found on this seem to have originated from reading Fox News)

i would expect this to be a telescoping series of some kind, yeah... the sort of thing to write a java program to run for you. if he really has stumbled upon a DIFFERENT way to calculate, i'd expect to see academic review w/i 30 days... otherwise, i'll assume he just took the series out to an impractical length and got an answer so precise it tells us nothing we couldn't have gotten within an inch of with a bit of kentucky windage and practice.
