do you think situational awareness can be maintained with headphones on
Honestly, no. Not if you're playing music or even light radio on them. I ride my bike all over, every day day in and day out. In the process I pass a lot of pedestrians and other cyclists. Hundreds of them in the course of a week. The ones with headphones are almost without exception not even aware enough of their surroundings to notice a giant of a man on a bicycle coming up next to them ringing a brass bell and saying "ON YOUR LEFT!" They're like zombies, and I've almost nailed a few of them. More than once I've had to head off into traffic or a grassy berm to avoid knocking them down.
I've heard all the arguments on the cycling forum from those who feel headphones don't restrict their awareness, but frankly I haven't seen any evidence of it in real life.
