skeet shooting

Agree with the advice on "fit". When you look at the specs on shotguns, they're supposedly mostly identical, but they sure don't all fit the same.

If you have some friends that would let you use their gun for a rew rounds, I'd be the best and cheapest way to find what works for you.

I was using an 870 for SC. A guy in my foursome (just met him that day) let me use his Citori. He was about my size and build, and the gun fit me perfectly. I typically shot about 50-55/100. I ran 20 straight with his gun.

Just bought an 870 express (all dpote's fault). I was shooting a an 1100 at the local club. Loved it, but couldn't quite afford one of my own. The 870's the same gun, just a pump. Like dpote said, you only need to pump four times. Good luck with arguably the most fun you can have while clothed.

Any know of experienced shotgun stock-fitters in North Texas, Dallas/Ft Worth kinda area?

I use a 26" bbl 1935 Marlin O/U 12ga with full/mod fixed chokes for everything. I do better at Trap than Skeet. I'm just a occasional shooter and my set up is fine for now. My Father-in-law gave my this gun a few years ago when I first started shooting Trap. It was his Trap/Skeet/Quail/Pheasant/Turkey/if it flies I'll shoot it gun. I really like this gun and it fits me really well. I figure with one "do everything gun" I have to focus that much more to bring my scores up even though I always have fun regardless of the count. What I saved on the gun I spend on ammo.

I agree with the other posters that the fit of the gun is important. Also important is what do you like the look of? What style of shotgun will call to you? If an O/U floats your boat then find an affordable one at a gun show or pawn shop. Those Russian Baikal's, recently marketed as the Remington Spartan I think, really aren't that bad for the money. I like their coach gun and plan on getting one soon just for grins. If a pump or Auto loader is your thing, then it's hard to beat a Remington 870 or 1100. Always easy to find and usually affordable. And get a 12ga, ammo is cheaper.

AndyC,
These places have some sort of Pro Shop. Maybe they can help.

It doesn't matter if you spend $200 on a used Rem 1100 or $20,000 on a Perazzi. The important thing is "fit". I shoot skeet every week and I shoot just as well with my 1187 Rem as my Beretta silver pigeon II. The new thing in Skeet is that people are getting away from the 26 inch barrel and going to 28 and 30. The longer barrel gives you a better sight picture and a smoother swing to the barrel. Remember "fit" is the most important.
