This is for you .22 aficionados.

My pistol cleaning rods are fairly thick. There's very little room around the rod at the muzzle crown.

For those of you who do a lot of shooting/cleaning 22s and/or 17s, what do you do? Recommendations for specific cleaning rods?

The reason I ask is because I just took delivery of a new/used Smith and Wesson Model 41. And I don't want to bugger up the crown.

Thanx in advance.

I have a coated rod in made for .22 caliber.

I also have an Otis cleaning kit that works just find in .22 caliber. I don't have a .17, but it might fit.

To do the bores of my air rifles, I used to use a heavy piece of weedwhacker line. It's stiff enough to push patches through.

Recently, the only thing my rifles have been getting as the bore snake treatment.

Don't go "too thin" or it will bend/bow while pushing the patch through and rub on the bore. What you want is a stiff rod (all jokes aside) supported by a patched jag in front and a bore-guide in the rear. No rod/bore contact. Push your brushes, patches, etc from chamber to muzzle only (yes this is a PITA, but it's worth it in the long run).
- just my .02

Also, for your 41, look into the stripped down .22 kits by OTIS. They are about $8 or so (cheaper that a BS) and don't get filled with crud like the BS's do.

The Patch Worm is an improvement on the wheedwhacker line. I use it on all of my 17's, 22's, .222's, .223's, and 22-250. I also use the cleaning buttons for my 30/30's.

You can also use a pull through made with a dowel handle and fishing line loop. Also, a dowel will work too if of lesser diameter than the bore.
