I took a look at the SKS they are selling at GI Joe's this morning and other than the thick coating of cosmoline the one on display was mint condition. No obvious wear at the chamber, feed ramp, bolt face - nada...

With the launcher and sight it was a bit long for what I would want but at $169 it seems like an awfully decent deal.

I got a yugo 59/66 SKS at DUnhams for $99. It also had a thick coating of cosmo amd cleaned up real nice.

I saw last week they had them priced at $119

If it's an un-issued(non fired) sks, $169 is not a bad deal. There going up in price, so I figure any sks in prime condition under $200 is a candidate. Every once in a while someone may stumble past a good deal. But these stories are getting fewer and fewer. For $169 I'd jump on it.

The "Excellent" grade rifles at AIM are not unissued...

I just purchased one a few weeks ago -- a 1978 model that has been through some kind of re-arsenal. Mine is really in "excellent condition", but does have finish wear on the grenade launcher muzzle and on the heel. Everything was covered in cosmo, but cleaned up very nicely. The stock had some minor dings and scratches, but also cleaned up nicely.

All in all an excellent product for an excellent price, but don't expect an unissued rifle (but of you get one, great!).

True "unissued" 59/66 carbines are going for $170 anywhere you go, always covered in cosmo. I got mine from Classic Arms, and although they said "clean and ready to fire," I think they need a new dictionary. The stock wasn't seeping cosmo, but the rest of it took some scrubbing. And it is new/unissued- no wear marks anywhere (but the stock did require some finishing).

So yeah, it's a decent deal. You can look around more, but I don't think prices will be dropping, and Chinese or Russian SKSs without a grenade launcher and bayonet will likely run at least $170, and that is for something in very good condition at best.

Excellent != unissued.

Plus, thrown in $20 or so that shiping seems to be going for, and transfer fees if he doesn;t have an FFL, and $169 ain't bad.

I paid $180 for mine a year ago, and it is still quite possibly the best I have very paid for a gun. Between it and the K31's, I think you are hard pressed to find better prices.
