Quick update:
Strangest thing, but overhauled the gun twice, every time I open her up I find new cosmoline deposits. This last time (it's been a hot february night here) I found that the fixed magazine, which was stiff to come out had suddenly popped out easily. Following what some posters mentioned I made sure the follower had full range of motion. Lo and behold rounds slid in easily down to the tenth. Wondering if cosmoline was swelling the wood, keeping the mag from seating properly. I'll keep you informed if it gives me trouble in the desert in a couple of months when we go shooting.
(sorry, where I live there aren't any near rifle ranges, so I only get to shoot my long arms once or twice a year. The only time I get to check if something's working prior is in the gun room, pointed at a rifle plate)
