I have a garage sale find SKS rifle. Bought it for $250.00, still in the cosmaline. Grooved barrel. Very little damage to the wood but no extras (no sling, bayonet, cleaning kit, etc. Just the basic rifle.) Very minor scratches to the metal parts. All numbers match (01320). serial number: 71-01320. Can anyone tell me about it? How old it is or where it might have been made? The factory triangle is a 3. There are no Chinese symbols behind the 3 before the serial number. I want to give it my husband for Christmas but hate to gift him with something I don't know much about. He's been looking for this gun and an M1 for some time and I think I got a deal, but? Grandma would prefer not to be embarrassed by having bought a pig in a poke.

Price seems good for what looks to be one of the later Chinese SKS imports without the bayonet. Are you sure the cleaning kit isn't in the little "trapdoor" in the stock?

You can find about all there is to know about the SKS here:
http://www.yooperj.com/SKS.htm

I think you got a great deal on a very clean rifle. You can order the cleaning rod, bayonet, cleaning kit and chinese bandolier on Amazon, often all together as a set.
Avoid the stripper clips from Amazon, in fact avoid any that arent military surplus. They won't fit into the stripper clip guide on the SKS.
Otherwise you got a good deal. Those later nice Chinese commercial ones go for $350-$450 in my area.

Get the BXN stripper clips off e-bay.

I believe these are Czech made, and you will not find better stripper clips for your SKS. Avoid at all costs the el cheapo stripper clips off amazon... they are not worth it, may or may not work and are in general awful.

Like others said, bayonets, cleaning kits, slings, and bandoliers are all available to give you Chinese SKS a full military kit setup!

CONGRATS on the rifle, you got a GREAT DEAL on the rifle. These usually go for north of $400 on Gun Broker, some in worse shape than yours.

Just a word of caution.

You may already know this, but the cosmoline'd SKS's need a thorough cleaning. It took me four hours to get my Yugo up to speed, and that included boiling the small parts in water along with the use of a steam wand and three rolls of paper towels. Be absolutely sure the firing pin channel is cleaned out as it could go full auto.:what:

To add what Chrisinva said, I THOUGHT I cleaned it really well, to include boiling the bolt group, but that's not good enough. The bolt group needs to be disassembled and cleaned. There will be cosmoline in it that will eventually freeze up the firing pin, and the rifle will do things that will make BATFE sad.

Looks like a unissued one. Very good price these days. he'll love it. Everyone should own a SKS. Very reliable and a great shooter. Good for defense or hunting up to deer size game. Plus they are leagle under most restrictive gun states. Even here in NY. NJ may be questionable.

Thank you so much.

I will keep all the websites to give to the husband. The trigger guard, receiver, clip, and back of the bolt slide all have same number that match the gun itself. And thank you for the cleaning rod. Little stinker was hiding right where you said it was. What a find. :) Ranks right up there with the wood plane I paid $2.50 for that turned out to be worth $600. (Did you know people collected those things??)

You folks have made my day.

That one appears to be one of the later "tourist" models.
Those were shootable, but had pinned barrels instead of threaded, as shortcuts, and they were not quite as well machined as the government models.

I had two of the tourist guns, one was a bear to break down for cleaning, and can't recall if it was that same one or the other one that tore the case mouth off a cartridge one day.

There should be no major problems with it, my local store had one sitting at about $300 here for a while before it moved, so your price is good.

That's the same price I paid for Yugo still packed in cosmoline a couple of years ago. That was before the panic though. You got a good deal especially considering it is a Norinco. You can make money off of it right now I'm sure. Or you can keep it and have a reliable rifle for many years to come. Stick with the original mag. Most of the detachables won't work but some will. But finding a good one is hard to do. People hang on to the good ones. I know I do.
