I just picked up a Norinco SKS and 540 rounds of 7.62x39 for $125, and i have a question about the ammo. The only thing on the label of the ammunition boxes is "MADE IN ROMANIA 7.62x39mm/20 rds." The ammo is soft point, and looks to be laquered steel case. The head stamp is 324 94. I cant seem to find much information on romanian softpoint ammo.
Any idea if this ammo is corrosive?

Nice buy!!! ANY SKS +500 rds. for $125 is a smoken deal.
I've been looking for a Romie for 2 years now.
She will find her way to my hands sooner or later.
I'm out for an all matching one on Exe. condition.
The wait goes on......

I think the safe bet is to consider it corrosive; spray some windex down the barrel right after shooting and clean it properly right after shooting. I do know some people who didn't clean after shooting ammo they thought was not corrosive; don't take the chance.

For once that is a packing and type of x39 that i have never come across. I serously doubt it is any more corrosive thats coming from TCW, but that isnt exactly saying it isnt corrosive. Id like to have a box or two of that stuff for the refrence collection. The stuff Romania is making right now (as of 2006) marked SADU 7.62 06 is the best x39 i have come across yet. Its sold under the hot shot name in 700 round cans imported by century. Its the only hot shot that is not made by privi.

If it is new production ammo like the Romanian Hot Shot ammo it is non corrosive. The 80's production is corrosive. Many of the strong copper solvents we use to clean our barrels contain 5% ammonia which is corrosive also. Just clean your SKS well after shooting and it will be fine. You should be cleaning after shooting anyway.

In your picture the pin that holds the reciever cover doesn't appear to be pushed all the way down into the indent. I don't know if you know the SKS very well so I pointed that out.

Thanks for the heads up Bartkowski, i had just reassembled it and hadnt pushed the pin all the way down. I noticed it when i uploaded the photo and pushed it down.

I shot it a few times today, and it would fire the first round and eject the shell but when chambering the next round it would throw the cartridge vertical and the bolt would close on it. Upon closer inspection it seems that someone has modified(ground off part of) the feed lips on the magazine and when the round comes up to chamber theres nothing holding it in so the forward pressure of the bolt and the upward pressure of the mag spring makes the round rotate around the base.

I ordered a new mag from tapco tonight so hopefully i will be able to shoot it next weekend and see how it is.
