Back awhile ago I bought two books from a local mil-surp store. One is a complete AK-47 SKS guide, the other is a how to book. It tells how to bubba an sks to make it full-auto and how to make an sks silencer.
Now before your pants get wet. I have no intentions of bubbaizing my sks or building illegal devices. My buddy told me that owning the book and the rifle is the same as owning an illegal FA weapon since I have the tools, gun, and knowhow. I told him he's full of it. That's like saying since I have a sack of potatoes, a pot, and some copper tubing tools and directions I have an illegal still. That 1st Amendment protects my write to buy/have the book and that for now you can't get in legal trouble for having knowledge. He countered that it was because I owned the rifle and the book it shows intent. Heck I own a mauser and a copy of Mein Kompf am I now guilt of genocide?

Am I taking a risk or breaking the law by owning this pamphlet? Should I burn it along with every other book I own that Big Brother doesn't like?
i.e. Anarchist's Cook Book, Mein Kampf.

keep in mind this is regarding parts and not instructions, but still, intent to manufacture is a crime:

Alone full auto parts are not illegal to possess. However should you own/store the compatible rifle with the parts the ATF will charge you for the intent to illegally manufacturer a machinegun. If convicted this carries a heavy fine and a minimum of a ten year prison sentence per infraction. The sale of full auto parts are intended to be used as replacements for current full auto guns, not to manufacture new ones.

Since the book is of little value to anyone who values their freedom, I would not tempt fate.

Since the book itself isnt a part, they shouldnt be able to bust you for constructive possession.

However, I dont understand why the book was ever written or published to begin with. The SKS isnt designed to withstand the stresses of full-auto fire. So in addition to being illegal, doing said modification would also be dumb and unsafe (in my opinion).

I understand why you say to get rid of the book.
But isn't being able to own this book part of the freedoms I should value?

I don't own the parts to full auto my sks or intend to ever do it, but IIRC a chimp with a nail file could probably do the book's bubba version.

In my opinion? of course.

In the ATF's opinion? Probably not. Thus the part about tempting fate. If intent to manufacture weren't an actual crime it'd be a little less gray. On the other hand a simple search reveals no shortage of people willing to sell us the said instructions and you don't ever hear about them getting prosecuted.

*I am not an expert on this. You're probably fine. But with some of the stuff the ATF is pulling lately, would you really be surprised?

no, I think the $.99 I paid was about how useful the book is.

I can just see the TV report now due to my library and guns;
Local "extremist" man arrested for illeged posession of illegal assault weapons, police said he had numerous "military style" firearms and anti-american literature including literature written by Hitler and "The Anarchist's Cook Book" as well as literature that outlined how to destroy bridges and concrete structures (college text book) and how to make explosives were found in among his possesions. Police say that over 10,000 rounds of military style ammunition was also siezed. The community really lucked out that this "terrorist" was caught before he could harm someone.

Just funny that all my books can be found at my local community college library IIRC.

-disclaimer-
I like to know my enemys; facists, communists, anarchists, etc. Hiding our collective heads in the sand will only facilitate the repetition of horrible events. So I'm not an Anarchist, Nazi, Facist, Communist, etc.

I'm with you. The old adage applies, "Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer."

Maybe if someday you are arrested for owning said book and SKS, the ACLU will come to your aid over the 1st amendment issue- that would get the lefties panties in bunches. I wouldn't hold my breath over them helping you though.

just read my hypothetical Tv report above.

I'd be called "Kezinski Jr." Owning books about "naughty things" like ideas and free thinking is bad to the communist left. To them the 1st Amd. is so they can say whatever they want and write whatever they want against conservatism and our government. The ACLU would tell me it's an NRA issue and the NRA would tell me it's an ACLU issue.

But wait, there's more...

I own a computer with internet access (obviously)...And I'm willing to bet SOMEPLACE on the web, the SAME information is available (dunno haven't looked). Does that mean I'm in constuctive posession as well?

Goes to show how ridiculous some of this stuff gets!

P.S. Apparently there the WAS a full-auto (!?) version of the SKS produced by the Chinese. I saw a movie with one in it, and I questioned the gurus on this, or another board, and they found referrences to it. Limited production (and usefullness), but apparently there was such a thing. Suspect it differed mechanically from any of the "normal" SKSs (meaning it probabaly took a bit more than filing down a few parts to produce.

Edited to add: there's TONS of stuff on the internet on building silencers (much of which I stumbled across). They're illegal in my state. So I can get dinged for looking this stuff up as well?

And all the guys with "normal" guns think that it was ok for the ATF to reverse their decision about the Akins device, it was just exploiting a "loophole". The noose will continue to tighten.

I too have concerns about my library. If "they" ever wanted to get me, "they" would have plenty of historical and technical books to make all sorts of claims about me. "He had poppy seeds in his kitchen and Confessions of an Opium Eater! He was obviously a narco-islamo-alQuida-tearist-smuggler!"

What a sad, paranoid society we've created.

I say keep 'em, any and all politically incorrect books, including Mein Kampf.

Should I burn it along with every other book I own that Big Brother doesn't like?

Reminds me of that line from "Last Crusade": "It tells me that goose-stepping morons like yourself should try reading books instead of burning them!" (If I could just say that with Connery's accent, I'd have it made.)

Of course you could always keep a dog-eared copy of The Catcher in the Rye on your person and plead insanity!

Part? My G-d man, it's the very foundation.

Not sure about the SKS, but the "nail file" version in the AK-47 will not fire on semi (i.e., full auto only), AND IT MAY BE DANGEROUS.

This is theory, I have not tried it - so no "no knock" warrants at my house, please, but it looks to me like there is a chance that such a conversion may fire out of battery.

Hell, I'd like a whole collection of these books, even for guns that I don't own. I saw a big table of them at the last gun show, but my friends were dragging me out by then.

Any good websites for these instructive manuals? (Purely for hypothetical interest)

If you do buy them, I'd suggest buying them face-to-face at gun shows or the like, and pay cash. Despite it not being illegal, I'd imagine that you still wouldnt want to leave a papertrail for the BATFE to use to kick in your door at 3AM.

I love freedom

I'm keeping the book, like I said before for the concerned folks, not gonna do it. And calling it a Bubba job was to describe how half-baked the method was. It does include some basic info on improving the trigger group as well.

I though about it last night. I don't have any intention of breaking the law, or any illegal parts. Knowledge is not illegal. If we all start worrying about what Big Brother thinks about our books, the websites we visit, the palces we go, the people we know, then the socialists won. I'm not ready for an Orwellian world and I can see us slipping into one as a nation.

That's like saying since I have a sack of potatoes, a pot, and some copper tubing tools and directions I have an illegal still.

Kind of like accusing someone of having "bomb-making components" because
they had a pound of black powder, some blue tip matches, [add a couple
other household items here], and some small pvc pipe at home? Certainly,
no one has ever been raided for that?

Kind of like accusing someone of having "meth-making components" because
they have "too much" sudafed, [add a couple other household items here],
and a strong smell at home? Certainly, no one.....

You getting the picture here? That's where things are going in this country.
Eventually, I will be raided because of the very thoughts I have constructed
in my head and expressed via pixels in cyberspace. My lethal weapon is my
mind. :neener:

Even setting aside the question of a federal felony for attempting such a conversion, one ought to be aware of the possibility of a weapon firing "out of battery" with an improper "conversion" with injurious consequences.

P.S. Apparently there the WAS a full-auto (!?) version of the SKS produced by the Chinese.

Yes, the Type 68 rifle. The bolt design was borrowed from AK47. You can't simply convert an SKS to it.

The Law For General Has A First Line That Explain The Ilegal Use Or What Make An Ilegal Some Act.For Example Possesion,Contruct Them,Own,Use,Etc.But Written Material Are Not Prohibited,Why The Autor IS Not Arrested Or Let Them Put The Book In The Book Store?
