I just got back from shooting my norinco at 100 yards had about a 6 inch group, shooting off the car hood and using surplus ammo. got me thinking about how i could do with better sights and ammo. tell me your stories, pictures are awesome too. tell me about your handloads thanks guys!

Buy a set of Tech sights. Go for the target front sight pin. And as already mentioned, buy GOOD AMMO! That surplus crap is good for plinking and getting you frustrated. :D

I think the junk surplus ammo is the biggest problem with most SKS accuracy woes.

I use TechSights with the narrow front post as Hammerson mentioned, and a handload consisting of Win. brass, CCI #34 primer, a near max charge of H-322, and Remington .310 125gr. softpoint. This gets me consistent 2.5 MOA or slightly better groups, which is plenty good enough for hogs and deer here in dense FL woods.

My rifle also shoots the Silver Bear 125gr SP pretty darn well.

I've always heard 7.62x39 round is just not that accurate... Is there any truth to that?
Nope.

There are some cartridges which are optimized for very specific purposes (like the "...ppc" and "...BR" etc. type rounds) but that's getting into "angels dancing on pinheads" type nitpicking.

At long range (at which the 7.62x39 doesn't really have the horsepower to do much good) a more aerodynamic bullet than is usually loaded in the round would help keep velocity and stability good longer.

But For field- and most kinds of target-level of accuracy within the useful range of the cartridge, one cartridge can be as good as another -- and all are only as good as the inherant accuracy of the rifle they're fired from.

Do a search for member krochus's accuracy testing of the round: http://www.thehighroad.org/showpost.php?p=6272324&postcount=39

You'd be surprised...

No, lack of accuracy has much more to do with the gun it's fired from than the cartridge itself. There's inconsistently assembled ammo and inaccurate rifles, but no cartridge is categorically "inaccurate". A match grade bolt action in 7.62x39 has the possibility to outshoot a match grade 308 (chosen since that is considered an "accurate" cartridge by some.)

Scratch has found a load that works well in his SKS. If you do not handload, a few different brands of American made, brass cased ammo may be in order.
