All serial #'s match.
He bought it around 1993 still packed in cosmoline.
About 150 rounds through it since. Not "modified" in any way.
Bore looks good to me, but I'm no expert.
He "might" still have the box. Not that I'm terribly interested.

Markings make little sense to me except for:

SKS 7.62X39 NORINCO CHINA POLY U.S.A. ATL. GA

It's a sharp clean gun from what I can see. Well, it's what you would expect for what it is.

I know of the recent buzz about "Yugo's" but don't know alot about the Norinco's.

Thanks.:)

Chinese SKS, good reliable rifle.probably more than a Yugo version. The Chinese exported both used military rifles and new manufactured rifles. A new manufactured SKS will most likely have a cast bolt carrier and a press in barrel, like an AK. The Chinese perfected the technique for the SKS. If this is the case, the space around the Bolt carrier, the big shiney part that is showing on the outside of the rifle WILL NOT HAVE machined groves, that other SKS's will have. The end of the barrel fitting into the receiver won't have flat spots on either side for a wrench to tighten it. New manufactured SKS's are as reliable as the traditiional style ones, so that doesn't make a difference in the rifle. The new manufacutred SKS's also tended to have spike bayonets. If if was bought in 1993, I would expect the bayonet to be removed in order to comply with the Bush Ban. Other SKS's won't have the bayonet removed because they were C&R.

From what you have described I have a new manufactured SKS. I may have been wrong about the time of purchase as it does have the spike bayonet.

Any idea of value? I poked around on gunbroker, but most I saw were "modified" into AK wannabes with lots of unneccessary goodies.

This is about as out of the box as you could get from what I can see.
But what do I know?

Not that it matters much. I basically got it for free, less a box of muzzleloading stuff I haven't used in years if at all.

I'm not diappointed either way, just would like to know.

Finding the year of manufacture is difficult. There' are some ways to date them but nobody really knows if it's accurate.

Norincos are unique in that they were made for commercial sales, where SKS from other countries (and even some Chinese) were military surplus. Some folks put them down, but two of my Norincos are very good shooters and 100% reliable.

Value? I've seen excellent original condition Norincos go as high as $350. Then some go for less than $200. They haven't been imported in about 10 years so they will go up in value.

Poke around this site for more info:

1993 could be right as they were banned outright in 1994, it would not have the Bayo after 1989 but some of the earliest post 89 pre 94s had the bayo in the box just not actually mounted some importers chose to not include em at all as a CYA measure B-West left em in the boxes Omega Weapons and Navy arms did as many and removed them completally.

Your date is easy enough to figure based on the serial # go here for directions

rather than have ya post your serial

The spike bayo was standardized and most early military ones got updated when re-arsenaled The Sino-soviets were pretty much the only ones as well as the honor guard SKSs (chromed) that had blade Bayo's, many people install blade bayo's on military SKSs but the forend cap is the givaway that it was originally a spike bayo gun as the notch is widened for the spike bayo.

Does yours have a side scope mount on it? what is the barrel length?

Get a bunch of ammo and go to it. I had a Yugo SKS and my friend still has his and I totally prefer the Chinese one I have now to both of them. It's light, it's dependable and it seems a bit more accurate than the 2 Yugos I've shot. It has a chrome bore, too, unlike the Yugo version. The Yugo SKS feels like a telephone pole in comparison. That Chinese SKS my favorite rifle. CHeck out a Williams peep sight for it. Ten times better than the original one.

Thanks for the info guys!:) Keep it coming!

If at least my "new" SKS has kept me entertained for the evening. I've hit some sites you have given me looking for DOM. None seem for sure, but the common concensus is "around" 1974.

Yes, now for the hunt for ammo.

Sugestions?

Wolf? Silver Bear?

Probably exactly like this one. Gun stores here sold a slew of 'em at about that time. No problems with one helluva lot of firing and it's pretty accurate too.

You have yourself a Chinese model 56. They are superb little carbines and will take care of you even if you don't take care of it. I bought my first one in 1992 for $69 and I purchased my last one a couple of months ago for $150. Great guns at a great price. Now go out and shoot it!:D

Be careful with the Wolf stuff. I bought 500 rounds to go on a big shoot cause it wasn't that expensive and it ended up having a lot of duds. There was no doubt the primer was struck, it just didn't go boom. In my humble opinion, that should happen almost never. It happened enough times in the first 150 rounds for me to decide to stay away from it from now on. Nothing kills a good "bump fire" run like a dud round.
