SOLVED: SKS reassembly problem.

Hi folks.

I have a Yugo SKS. I've owned it since the fall and have shot it just once.

Up until this morning, everything worked fine. This past weekend I refinished the stock and reassembled it. No problems during reassembly. At the range I ran into a problem.

Summary and steps I took.
1) Trigger safety wouldn't move. (It wouldn't disengage)
2) Broke down the action.
3) Trigger safety worked fine outside of stock.
4) Put back together but noticed it took extra effort to snap in trigger group.
5) Found same condition as 1.
6) Repeat steps 2 and 3.
7) Found I couldn't repeat step 4.

Now I can't get the trigger group in at all. The pins that lock in the front drop in easily and freely. I then try to press in the rear and it's impossible.

It feels like the spring is fully compressing before the trigger group can engage the locking mechanism in back.

How far out is the spring supposed to stick out of the stock. I swear mine looks like it's sticking out further now than it did in the fall but I could be just imagining that.

Any other ideas as to why putting the trigger group could get progressively more difficult?

Thanks

Andy

Was the safety in the safe position when you removed and replaced the trigger assembly?

As far as I know, yes it was. I have yet to have a chance to investigate this further tonight.

However, I am pretty sure it was.

The funny thing is that when I first loaded the rifle I tried to disengage the safety. It wouldn't budge. It felt is if something inside was preventing it from moving.

When I took it apart, it not only moved freely, but the mechanism is so simple, I couldn't even imagine how it could get locked up in the first place.

But to clarify, the safety should be on when removing/replacing the trigger group. Correct?

Thanks.

I didn't even know about that board. I just checked and seveal people already have posted similar questions and a whole host of things to check. I'll figure this out and reply once I have a solution.

Solved!

Hey jrfoxx, Thanks for the link to that sks board.

Problem solved. I like many people, have tried to put the trigger group back in while the bolt was in. You can't do that.

I didn't realize you MUST remove the bolt each time.

I followed the complete break down/reassembly instructions and all is good.

Thanks

Hmmmm. I've put the trigger group in my SKSs many times with the "bolt in", as in changing out from the fixed to a large capacity mag. Sounds a little odd to me.

But whatever works. Maybe it was a cocked vs. uncocked problem. Having the bolt and bolt carrier in would not have been a problem; safety off would have been a problem.

Quien sabe.....?

I hate putting the trigger assembly in always a PITA for me however I do like sks's I own 2 yugo's an egyptian rasheed (very similar) and a russian that I am rebuilding from a kit. Dad had one when I was lil and I always wanted one ever since. I killed my first and second deer with his along with my first bear. Sks is one of my Fav guns ;) glad you figured out your problem.

To get the trigger group locked in, I put the rifle (minus the bolt, bolt cover, etc.) upside down on the floor on a board and hit the area behind the trigger guard with a hammer, using a piece of wood to protect the metal. Works very well.

Thats the only way I've been able to get the trigger back in.
