SKS Recoil vs AR-15. How do they compair?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks the AR's sound like a cheap chinese toy when you shoot them.

I have not found either rifle to have an offensive level of recoil.

The AR seems a little louder, and the SKS maybe has a little more recoil.

The AR sounds like: CRACK, rattle-sproing, kind of toylike. The SKS sounds like: BOOM, slam-crash! Much more viscerally satisfying.

+1 to that! Assuming you're wearing hearing protection, an AR sounds like a pogo stick next to your head.

On the other hand, my AK sounds like it has gravel in the action.

I didn't install the recoil buffer on my SKS because it had excessive felt recoil. I did it to reduce the jarring that could shake a receiver-mounted scope. As a happy side effect, I find it easier to reacquire my target after each shot.

heeheehee the AR does sound exactly like that!

I don't know about it being especially loud though, in basic i once forgot my earplugs on the first magazine, and it wasn't errible, when i had my Oh **** moment it was because i was worried about a drill sergeant or range safety guy would notice.

In other words, it's not unpleasant for me, and to be honest I never really thought about the difference in "noise" between these two calibers.

I would think that what he is referring to is the noise heard and/or felt by someone to the right or left of the shooter. Especially when the AR-15 is using a compensator. The rifle makes a very sharp and sometimes uncomfortable blast not for the shooter but for others in the immediate vicinity. Hearing protection is a must but you still can fell the shock-wave of that little round.

True, but it does sound freakin' menacing, doesn't it?

And as someone else said, the recoil of the SKS and AK are very similar. Actually, my M70 has slightly less felt recoil than my father's SKS. Probably because the M70 has a rubber buttstock vs the steel SKS buttplate. Yeah, the steel plate looks like it would hurt somethin' fierce, but it is very pleasant to shoot. The first time I pulled the trigger of that SKS, metal buttplate and all, I cringed thinking it would feel like a 20" 12 ga SxS with a hard plastic buttstock.

Being that I built up the possible recoil in my mind so much, when I first pulled the trigger it took me a moment or two to realize that it did indeed fire!

If you're worried about SKS, AK, or AR recoil, I have the solution. Just do what I did.

Buy an M44, an Enfield, or an Ishapore 2A. All have metal buttplates. None of them fires an "intermediate" cartridge. Once you have one of these rifles, take it to the range and blaze through a can of surplus ammo.

Then pick up your SKS, AK, or AR. Acquire your target. Pull the trigger. Pull again and again and again. Ask yourself, "Did it go off yet?" Resist the urge to look down the muzzle and make sure the gun works.
