Hi folks.
I am considering mounting a scope to one of my SKS's, more than likely the Yugo.

Im looking for advice about what mount to get and what potential a scoped SKS has.

Im considering this as a deer/cyote setup.

thanks for yer time, ip.

I never had a scope mount on a SKS that I liked. The SKS was just never meant to have a scope and most of the mounts out there are a waist of money you could of used on ammo and range fees you could of used to learn to use the original iron sights.

But your best bet would probably be a good quality scout mount or use a drill and tap mount. The later I don't recommend if the rifle is in good shape or of collector value like a Russian. There are too many Bubbas in this world allready.

my chinese would only group about 7-8 inches at 100. my brothers is russian paratroop (or something like that) and it would do 4-5 at 100 which i thought was pretty good for an sks.

right on, I kinda thought thats what I would hear..

I was considering mounting a scope so I wouldnt have to buy a nother rifle..

I can group around 5-6 with the Yugo, locked bolt, at 100... so I suppose yall are right, SKS just wasnt ment for optics..

thanks!
ip.

The SKS I recently bought has a mount and low power scope. I believe both to be of Chinese manufacture like the gun. I have yet to fire the weapon with or without the scope. I got the entire package for less than I have seen just the rifle so even if the scope doesn't work out, nothing lost.

hey when you get to shoot it, would you mind stopping back thru and let us know how its running for you?!

thanks!
ip.

I put a scope on my yugo. Receiver cover changeout.
I can shoot ten rounds into about 4" at 100 yards
using a scope I got with a BB gun.

At $17-20 you really wont lose much on trying it out.
It should be a really tight fit, and that is good, so don't file it unless you really have to. the only problem I had was the pin retainer rod length. Fixed it easily with a rat tail file.

it really comes down to the quality of your eyes more than the quality of your rifle in my opinion.

eyes like a hawk, use the irons,

eyes like mine, buy a cheap scope.

Personally I'd go with a rear sight replacement mount, mine is a Millet but their is another make now that looks about the same. I use a 4 MOA red dot and that brings out all the accuracy an SKS is made for. On a good day mine will put 5 in 2-2.5", usually more like 2.5-3.

The best set-up I have used is the one from Choate Tools and 4X barska. It is drill and tap. My Yugo shoots 2" regularly and sometimes better. I have to add, I only shoot handloads and my SKS is glass bedded with modified magazine slot. I'm in the process of painting it. Here's a pic
