I have a Norinco SKS that is not firing. When I pull the trigger all I hear is a click. The first time this happened I thought it was just bad ammo, cause I was shooting some older stuff. Then I got to looking and I have no strikes on the primers.

Initially I thought the firing pin had stuck in the bolt. I took the pin out of the bolt and cleaned it up thinking this would fix my problem. The firing pin now moves freely in the bolt, but I am still not getting any strike on the primers, just the click when I pull the trigger.

Any suggestions?

Have you checked that the firing pin is not broken or otherwise "bad?" Does it protrude properly from the rear of the bolt (so the hammer can hit it) and through the bolt-face (so it will hit the primer)?

Have you tried removing the top cover and recoil spring and watching what happens when you dry-fire? Does the hammer fall? Does it hit the firing pin?

The firing pin looks okay, doesn't look like it's broke or anything. It is sticking out of the rear of the bolt, and it is able to protrude from the front of the bolt when pushed from the rear. The hammer does fall when the trigger is pulled.

Any other things to look for?

If the hammer falls, strikes the pin, and the firing pin flys forward, striking the primer ... the gun should go BANG. Not exactly sure I can imagine what the problem would be.

If you're getting no firing pin strike, then that firing pin is NOT flying foraward as it should -- period. Gonna have to figure out what's missing in the equation.

You have pulled the top cover and spring and watched the hammer strike the firing pin?

If so...I'm out of suggestions.

The type 4 Chinese firing pin can be installed upside down or reversed and prevent the firing pin from striking the primer. Check to make sure the firing pin protrudes from the face of the bolt.

Still no luck.

I have tried installing the firing pin every way I could and still no luck. I have disassembled the rifle and cleaned everything.

The safety is not on.

I removed the top cover and dry fired and watched the hammer hit the rear of the bolt.

I am going to keep messing with it this weekend and if no luck take to a gunsmith Monday. I really don't want to put the money in this gun though.

A couple questions: Does anyone know how long the firing pin is supposed to be? Also, I can not get the trigger group to "fire" when removed from the gun, is this normal?

Yes. There are several "spurs" that protrude from the trigger group that are safeties to keep the hammer from falling until the bolt is completely in battery. You'd have to have pressure on them just so to get the hammer to fall.

Just wanted to give an update.

Problem resolved. Apparently one of the springs in the gas system was bad. This was not allowing the bolt to close all the way.

I don't really understand what the issue was, but the gun back is back to firing now so I am happy.
