I have a chinese SKS and was thinking about a synthetic stock, specifically either this or this.

I just had a couple of general questions. I have a Chinese SKS, would any fitting be required or would the parts simply drop in? Also, is there anything in 922 (which I'm not so familiar with) that I have to worry about?

No worries about 922(r).

I would avoid the ATI stocks, and go for the Chaote draganov stock.

It costs more, but it is a much nicer stock.

No worries about 922(r).
Um, I disagree.

Yes you certainly should be concerned about 9.22(r) unless you can prove that your rifle was imported before 1991. That's an imported rifle without enough U.S. made parts on it to exempt you from the law prohibiting importation of an assault weapon (replacing a number of parts with U.S. made parts is why imported AKs are legal for example). The ATI folding stock would be illegal. As would a removable magazine, flash suppressor, bayonette, etc.

A chinese sks with a dragunov stock and no bayo is legal with the factory ten round mag. I have a chinese paratrooper sks with a choate dragunov stock and I like it alot. Mark

SKS stock

I would recommend the Butler Creek stock. I've tried the others and the Butler Creek was the best for me in terms of handling, finish and material.

I have a Choate Conventional Stock that I'll let go for $45 shipped.
Like I said, I put it on, didn't like look, so I put the wooden stock back on. The gun has never been fired with that stock on.

I've got that Choate Sporter stock on mine, and I love it.

That's the one I'd recommend.

DMK,

If you are just replacing the stock, you are replacing imported parts with other imported parts. There is no change in parts count, so you stay legal under 922 (r).

Unless there is something else that I am missing?

Just incase, I have posted a question about this over on the legal section of SKSboards.com

Some of you guys have mentioned the bayonet...well, i have a spike bayonet on my rifle already, if it makes any difference. I don't think I'm really in the market for a folding stock, but Dragunov stocks kind of appeal to me. I do, however, like the stock the way it is now, except for the whole wood thing.

Are these stocks designed for bayonets?
Also, how many non-foreign parts do I need to add to get rid of the 922 problem? I'm getting a replacement gas tube for it anyway.

n3rdday,

According to the FAQs that I searched out, in order to use a draganov stock with a thumbhole stock, you won't need to replace any parts.

That might be different if you already have a bayonet on there.

A bigger question is when did you purchase the rifle, and did it have the bayonet on it when you purchased it. If it is not pre-ban (pre-'89, meaning purchased in the US prior to '89), it can't legally have a bayonet on it. It is very important to have a reciept that shows that the original purchase date if it is pre-ban.

Here is a link that should help you out.

The Choate dragonuv style stock is the way to go IMO. I have had one on my chicom SKS for years now. It does not have a channel cut in it to accomodate the bayonet however, so just take it off. It is a worlds better stock than any of the ATI stocks, the ATI drag-style stock is a big fat piece of crap in comparison (as is the folder, had one briefly, piece of junk). It's a little pricey for around $70ish but it's a nice stock.

It had the bayonet on when bought, which was fairly recently. I bought it from a local gun store. How exactly does one go about removing the bayonet?
