Okay, so as someone who is looking to get one of these SKSs... what should I be looking for? There are different nationalities, different mag types, and tons of aftermarket stocks... a lot of the SKS options on gunbroker already have aftermarket synthetic stocks, which I've been kinda thinking I'd do anyway. Any problems with the fit on those? Anything to avoid?

Thanks guys.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and skip the AK mag thing... If you want an AK, get an AK. Places where AK's are illegal, so are SKS' with detachable mags.

Stick with the fixed 10 round mag for rock solid reliability... and no legal problems...

Are there conversion kits to make an SKS take AK mags?

Yes, but most function poorly

This company makes a system with out the duck bill and I've heard you can slightly modify AK47 mags to fit there adapter. But it's pricey

All HITECH Mags and are now prefitted and individually live feed tested
at our factory just prior to shipping on test rifles to insure a perfect fit and feed!

After installing the HiTech SKS magazine adapter, can I use standard AK magazines or only the HiTech magazines?

As far as why the Russians switched/upgraded to AK versus SKS.

1. SKS was just like the M-1 Garand, low capacity magazine.

2. SKS was semi-automatic only.

These two items were its down fall, cause the Russians wanted something that was just as reliable, but held more rounds, and was fully-auto capable for their intermediate cartridge that is why the Chinese were able to get a SKS to accept the AK mags. I owned a SKS, and didn't prefer it, cause it was one of the ones that couldn't accept AK mags. The aftermarket SKS mags for the rifle I had was the biggest problem. I eventually bought an AK, and still have that rifle.
