Skunks

The smell of human urine and hair is enough to drive off most animals. Works wonders on moles and racoons, never tried it on skunks. Worth a shot though, its free and doesn't involve potential spraying.

When I was 12 or so years old, I thought it was a good idea to shoot the skunk that was in my fathers garage. So, out came the trusty Mossberg .22 rifle. Well, I killed the skunk in the corner of the garage. Turns out it wasn't a good idea. I don't know who was madder, my father or the neighbors. Phew.

I just got rid of one with the .22. One little piece of info....perfect headshot right behind the eye and she still emptied the contents of the spray gland. Grass, bushes and side of house where hit. I discovered that 1/2 gallon of clorox in a gallon of water sprayed on everything will kill the smell and does a pretty good number on the grass too. The one thing I have learned is that skunks are usually opportunistic as far as dens go. Mine was dug buy a goundhog that predeceased the skunk as I did not get the burrow filled in a timely fashion. Check around the foundation occasionally and don't put off filling any hole after you get the critter out. Opposums will also take advantage of the empty burrow.

I used to work for a man that had a skunk problem. We used a hav-a-hart live cage trap to capture the skunks.(baited with tuna fish in the can) The cage trap caught them one at a time, although we did catch two skunks in the trap at once one time. If you capture a non-target species (such as neighbor's cat, and we did catch him too), you can allow the non-target animal to go free... Once non-targets are caught once or twice, they avoid the trap.
The real fun begins when you capture one of the skunks. We used an old blanket and lifted it up in front of us, and stood behind it, sort of stretched out like a big shower curtain withou the rod holder... We approached the trap, and CAREFULLY covered it with the blanket/ tarp. (depending on the occasion.) Once the trap was covered, we used some very slim rods about 6' long ( i think they were actually fiberglass electric fence posts, but a number of things will work) and slid 2 of them through the each end of the live trap. We then hoisted them up CAREFULLY, as Indiana Jones lifted the Ark of the covenant in Raider's of the lost Ark, and carried it to a small pond on the farm. The blanket, cage, and poles were slid into the water, where the skunks were silently dispatched by drowning. I sort of hated that part of it, but i was hired hand on the farm, and raccoons, skunks, and other types of animals started gettign k-9 distemper.
High-value animals were raised on the farm, and he did not want to discharge a gun anywhwere near the breeding operation. The method worked very efficiently.

You could always try re-location, but the ponds was fairly close to the place of trapment, and the trap was recovered about 30 minutes later, and reset. This took care of the farmer's skunk problem

A couple coni-bears will catch-em and squeeze the life right out of em,all while you sleep !! just make sure they dead before you approach from rear !!

We've had one (or more) kill a few of our chicks and stealing who knows how many eggs. We had one wondering around in the daylight (must have been rabid), dispatched with 12 gauge. Then we caught one in a trap baited with the dead chick it had left behind and shot it with a .22 mag. In my opinion there are enough pest control companies in the nearby cities trapping them and relocating them that a few less around my chickens, kids and dog is OK.
Threw the body of the last one down in the field and wierdest thing is, the buzzards turned the body completely inside out!

There are PLENTY of ways to get rid of any wild or stray animal that takes up residence where you don't want it to WITHOUT being cruel or sick. Traps, lights, music, mothballs, bullets, whatever.... they all may work. I could just as easily put one down with my rifle or shotgun as trap it... but be sure that If I made the decision to kill something it would be a quick end with as little suffering as possible.

DROWNING a trapped animal (or un-trapped animal for that matter) is TORTURE and that is quite frankly detestable and sick. Whoever does that disgusts me, and if I ever caught somebody doing it....... pretty sure I would end up in a mugbook for something bad.

Didn't some famous serial killers start out with similar beginnings?
That is actually one of the most humane ways to dispatch an animal. CO2 build up causes unconsiousness before death. It's an IACUC approved method for euthanizing animals in a field setting.

This information was incorrect (possibly outdated). Apologies.

This is not correct.

See the IACUC page on Euthanasia: http://www.avma.org/issues/animal_welfare/euthanasia.pdf

Under the section entitled "
Appendix 4—Some unacceptable agents and methods of euthanasia"
:

" Drowning is not a means of euthanasia and is inhumane"
