Well my new CPX-1 came today and although I did not have a lot of time on my hands today, I did fire a few rounds and take some pics. My 4 year old is home with me this afternoon so I will have to do an extended range session another day.
I decided to take this one out to shoot directly out of the box, meaning I did not clean or wipe any of the factory stuff off. I did field strip it to make sure everything looked alright.
I shot about 65 rounds of Remington UMC JHP 115 gr. (may be a different weight, but I threw the box out before I looked) and exactly 18 rounds of Golden Sabers 124 gr JHP. When I chambered the first round it kinda hung up a bit but I realized that I did not let the slide cycle on its own power. I knda eased it forward which led to the hang up. After I corrected my technique this never happened again. One other thing that had me stumped was a few light strikes. This time I stopped and came to my computer and did a little research on the Skyy Forum and found a guy that had the same thing happend to him. He talked to Joe (the head Skyy man) and Joe told him that the trigger has to come all the way forward to reset. Failure to let the trigger reset fully with result in a possible light strike. Not sure about the mechanics of this but I will look into it further. The guy that contacted Joe did not have the problem again and neither did I after I changed my trigger technique a little on the reset. There were other failures of any kind. It ate the two different JHP fine, although I realize that the number of rounds I fired is not a real test. As I have time I will update this post with more figures.
Here is what I like about the constuction of the Skyy. I am NOT comparing it to a Kel-tec since I have never owned one. I would say the trigger pull is actually a little better than the Taurus DAO autos I have shot. I would rate the Skyy as a lighter pull as well as shorter distance.
Likes:
Barrel has a notch for the recoil spring. Locks in very nicely.
Steel guide rod with double recoil spring: all one piece.
Steel sites
Fit and finish is excellect
Drop free mag
Steel trigger
Things I would change:
I would rethink the trigger mechanism so that the reset is not quite as touchy (relating to the light strike)
Maybe a bit picky, but I like getting cleaning tools also with a new pistol. The Skyy came with a trigger lock and two mags but no tools.
