Folks:

Dreamed last night I unloaded my Glock, and sure enough, it's in a different spot this morning, chamber empty, decocked (!) (EEEErrrrgh!) According to Wikipedia, the name for this is somnambulism. Any folks ever do this? Have family members or friends do so?

Having a slight case of the heebie jeebies over this; yes, I know the safety issues w/ Glocks - my 3 digit S/N is in my jeans pocket right now.

Gig 'em,

I have this as well yet i haven't done something this serious. I go to the bathroom and do small tasks like cleaning while i sleep walk. However it is very dangerous, not just because of the guns, but because you can fall down stairs, out windows, and some people go out and drive in their cars! See your doctor and if it happens a lot more you should be on medication.

I haven't done it with a gun but have sleepwalked a few times.
Keep it far enough away from you that you have to really reach to get it. You said it was decocked which means at some point you pulled the trigger :uhoh:

Holy ****!!!!
I think this is a good reason to have the gun not accessible. For a good laugh at my expense. When I was a kid a sleptwalked. About 7 years old I got out of bed went into the kitchen a pee'd on the floor-infront of my mom who was cleaning- all while sleep walking. She knew what was going on and so I didn't loose the ability to sit. I still get teased about that one 18 years later. Thank God I grew out of that!!! Hope you all got a good laugh at my expense.

Glock decock = pulling trigger

Yep, I pulled the trigger - and remember checking the chamber before doing so - albeit not visually, b/c it was dark : (

BTW - Where is PRK, kungfu?

That'd creep me out. That could very quickly and very easily turn into a really bad situation. I wouldn't trust myself carrying a 1911 with all the safeties, let alone a glock, in my sleep.

Shadow,

Well, I hardly have a concealed carry holster in my PJ's, nor was anyone else in the house. What gun do you take to bed then?

I would put the gun in a quick access safe like a gun vault. So you can still get to it if needed but hopefully won't while sleep walking.

My son was medically discharged from the Marines (0311 infantry) because of sleepwalking. He keeps a loaded Glock in his room, too. I'd better show him this.

Never shared this with anybody, but my wife, didn't have much choice but to share it with her. When I first got back from Iraq, I often had nightmares in which I was clearing houses, or being over run. One night about a month after I got home, my wife woke me up and she had a look of absolute terror on her face. I realized that my XD was in my hands and I was sitting up in the bed sweating profusely. I was there, and apparently It was so real that I had grabbed the pistol off the nightstand. The next morning I bought a safe with a keypad, and the pistol has stayed there ever since. I don't what I would have done had I shot her on accident. I would be a wreck emotionally and legally. I can't imagine a jury ever believing my story.

By the way, the nightmares stopped after I bought the safe. Kinda strange.

bb <---- counts - and not only did I clear the chamber before decocking, but dropped the ejected round back @ the top of the mag - and inserted the full mag @ some point after dropping the slide.

I don't sleep walk, but just out of curiosity... Would it even matter if the gun was in a keypad safe next to the bed? I'd imagine if you can sleepwalk while unloading and decocking a Glock, you'd be just as able to press 4 buttons on a safe, and then proceed to do the same.

GET YOURSELF A CHEAP LOCKBOX just to add one more step that you might be familiar with. Even if you attached the key to the box, (not in the lock).

Sleepwalking has always creeped me out. The first time I actually saw it happen was while spending the night at a friends house after being kicked out of mine. It's about 3 a.m. and I'm watching tv because I can't sleep, and he comes downstairs NAKED, walks past me, goes into the kitchen, where he proceeds to turn on the stove and cook some ramen. :what:

Backbencher - I'm seriously glad that you weren't hurt...that could have been really, really bad. I agree with the rest here, talk to your doctor and get something to help you stay put at night. And maybe keep the mag seperate from the pistol, in a easy-ish to reach place next time? Might not keep it from happening again, but might give ya an extra little chance to wake up.

+1 to getting treatment right away. Handling guns while sleepwalking just has BAD written all over it. While a cheap lockbox for your Glock would help, it would just be treating the symptoms, and not resolving your problem. So, get yourself to a doctor right away!

When I have the gun accessible during sleep hours, it's in a holster, and only the magazine is loaded, not the chamber. The guy that taught me that one convinced me that if I ever wake up and there's a bad dude sitting on my chest with a gun to my head, it's not going to matter whether or not there's a round in the chamber. If I have a few seconds to access the gun, then I can rack the slide once and be good to go.

I suppose I'm much happier waking up to a safed gun than to one that started out unloaded & ended up loaded & cocked. When Uncle pays me we'll price some lock boxes - in the meantime, the mag stays out, & probably will lock the slide back. Will check w/ the VA next week, see if they think I should come in.

PS - Ohio - buy more guns

I think the lockbox idea couldn't hurt. I keep a pistol CIII if it is readily accessible when I sleep. Some years ago I can home from work and had about 15 minutes before I had to go somewhere so I stretched out just to relax, I had been up for 20 some hours with much caffiene. I fell asleep instantly even though I didn't want to. Somewhere my mind knew I had to wake up so I had several morphing dreams in which someone was shaking me to wake up. The last part of the dream someone had broken into my home and was standing over my bed choking me. I immediately woke up and grabbed my bedside 1911. So there I was, safety thumbed off on a now Condition 0 1911, finger on trigger, pointing at an empty space of the ceiling where the guy was, and choking the living crap out of myself with my other hand that had been shaking me all along to wake me up. Less coffee, more sleep, Conditon III was what I took away from that.

Then there was the time I sleepwalked to the bathroom on the main floor from my 2nd floor bedroom. I made those stairs okay. 2 doors in the hall, bathroom and basement stairs. I opened the door, hmm no fuzzy rug, tumble, tumble, crash. Cured me of sleepwalking for a long time.

Having corresponded w/ someone from the DPRK, I was a little surprised as they don't characterize themselves as hippies - not party members, anyway.
