I want to be able to put a sling on my 8 shot Mossberg 500. The gun only came with a single sling stud on the buttstock, there's no attatchment point on the front end.

How do you go about attaching a sling to this kind of gun? Is there a way to add a second sling attachment at the front? Or am I supposed to be able to attach a sling using only that one stud in the buttstock?

Thanks!

I think I have the same Mossberg as you do.

I just attached a TacStar barrel clamp to the end. It has a sling stud on the bolt going through it.

Since you mentioned on another post that it was being used for defense, I should mention that there are mixed feelings on this board regarding the use of slings for HD shotguns.

Thanks for your quick replies!

I'm aware of the downsides of using a sling indoors. I doubt I'd use a sling on the shotgun very often, but I'd still like to have the option. Who knows, maybe a New Orleans type disaster will strike here and I'll have to walk out on foot, carrying my shotgun.

Anyway, that barrel clamp looks like it would do the trick. What other options are there?

Blackhawk makes a front side sling mount, if that makes sense. Its like a plate that goes inbetween the mag tube and barrel with a slot on the side.

Come to think about it, your 500 should have come with a little stud that screws into the the little magazine end cap. It looks sorta like the pieces in the Michaels of Oregon product. I believe it came in a little manila envelope.

The magazine extends right out to the end of the muzzle on the 8 shot model that I have. The sling screws, swivels and sling would actually portrude a little bit out in front of the muzzle. Is this a problem?

shouldnt be a problem, although i guess its would be possible to get the sling to cover the muzzle..... but i think you would have to be trying pretty hard to pull that off.

For just occasional sling use,, I make mine out of 1" nylon strap. Sew a QD swivel on one end that will fit your stud on the stock. Measure out how long you want the sling to be and then sew a loop in the other end that will fit around the barrel just above the slide. When you want a sling, just slide the loop over the barrel then hook the other end to the stud. It can't come off but when you are at your destination it rolls up easily and stores in your pocket. They work great and I have these on all my hunting guns!

Specter Gear

Visit: http://www.spectergear.com/slings.htm

They've got a variety of sling options for a WIDE RANGE of weapons. I put their CST sling and buttstock 6-shell holder on my Remington 870 P MAX. The sling is great, comes with an attachment that slides between the barrel and magazine tube and has a quick-detach option available in any event I need to part ways with my shotty in a hurry. I was going to put a side-saddle shell holder on my reciever, but with my SureFire forend, I wanted the extra weight of six shells further back on the buttstock in an attempt to improve balance. I AM EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH BOTH PRODUCTS! Specter's gear served me well in Iraq...

By the way, some may not recommend slings for HD shotties, but as you said, it has it's uses. I prefer to have a sling on it for a variety of reasons:

1) Marines sling pretty much everything!
2) Instead of dropping my baby on the deck in the event that I have to transition to a secondy weapon/sidearm, I can simply swing it to the rear and draw my sidearm.
3) Same reason as above, but if I need to use my hands for something else (call 911, restrain intruder, deliver first aid, etc), I can sling it away, but still have it securely on my body and ready if needed.

On my 500 there's a threaded hole on the bottom of the piece of metal the barrel tightening screw is on. (yea...that's not confusing):scrutiny:
I just got a sling swivel and screwed in in. It stuck out a little, so I cut a little off and VIOLA. Done for about $2.00.
I THINK it's an 8-32 thread. Not sure.

Mossberg 500 Sling Swivel Stud

You can find the stud that screws in the magazine cap of the shotgun on e-bay. This way you can attach a sling swivel set to the stud in the buttstock, and the stud in the magazine cap.

Here is the link for the stud on e-bay:
