Sling swivel "studs" on Franchi shotguns question (and for that matter Remington 783s and other similar rigs).

These are plastic, molded into the stock - the question is, are they reinforced under the plastic with steel or aluminum alloy?

If the answer is no, then people are paying way WAY too much for Franchi shotguns, sadly (if anyone is buying them at all).

What other long guns have this plastic setup? Is there a mixed bag of some reinforced / some not?

Thanks.

"Today's polymers are plenty tough."

I would aver that that is incorrect. There is no polymer in existence or will ever be in existence that approaches steel's strength, adequate for this purpose. Plastic *will* break on such a thin part - it's just a matter of time. Lots of stress over a long period of time on a thin piece = guaranteed breakage ... probably at the worst possible time, under 20 deg F when the plastic is at its weakest, meaning you are out on a hunt.

A steel stud drilled into a synthetic stock will probably rip out easier.

No, not if it's anchored correctly, as it should be / must be. Why are we comparing two horrible crappy ways to piece together a $900 gun? There are ways to do it right on a plastic stock gun, and have been for many many decades. This is nothing new.

I think you are making much ado about very little here. My Benelli Nova has been used and abused by me and the plastic rear sling mount is still intact. In and out of duck blinds ands boats is hard on guns and slings. As far as I know, it is not reinforced in any way. The front sling mount is integral to the barrel ring and as such is made of steel.

The Benelli Nova and most of the plastic stocked Benellis rear sling mount is the same theory as on that Franchi you linked and since the two companies are linked somehow and share technology a bit, I would venture to say the sling mounts are made the exact same way.

You would think with all the Benelli owners out there, many of whom have paid over $1000 for their shotgun, there would have been some complaints in the last many years.

I have the same gun, Benelli Nova, and the rear sling hole is integral and is beefy. In some ways, it's just one less thing to rust and have to oil, especially when hunting in salt water. Also, if it's synthetic I don't mind the non-steel parts, saves me the time drilling and tapping the stud. I only like steel studs on my walnut furniture guns.
