Just installed a slip on rubber Recoil Pad on my 500. Got to wondering if left on for extended time will it affect the wood or finish. I'm thinking it probably will over some time. I have a Remington 700 that I kept in a gun cabinet with glass doors for years. The way the cabinet was made the guns turned slightly to one side. One side of the stock caught more light from a window across the room than the other. Now the stock on the 700 is a little lighter on that side than the other. Thinking the recoil pad will cause the same thing.

Yes but it will take a fair amount of time just like your experience with your gun cabinet.

Yes, it will affect the finish on a wood stock. How much will depend on other conditions like humidity, temperature and sunlight. I don't really have a solution except to remove the pad if you don't expect to use the gun for an extended period. Since it is a "slip on", I assume it will slip off too.

Besides what has already been mentioned (light) another factor is what the pad is made of. Unless it is leather, the pad is undoubtedly a type of plastic. Just about all plastics are made of stuff which includes a "solvent" of some sort. Said solvent can/will migrate from the pad to anything nearby. To be on the safe side you should remove the pad whenever you store the rifle for more than a few days. There are a few plastics which don't expel solvents (Teflon, ABS, etc.) but I doubt you know what your new pad is made of.
At the ripe age of 75 I could show many examples of "exfloration" in my shop and home.
