My dad recently gave me his Savage 940E break action shotgun. It's been at my uncle's house for years, and probably hasn't been fired in 10. I broke it down the other day just to familiarize myself with it. I didn't notice any gunk or obvious cleaning issues, but I later noticed that the trigger is very slow returning forward. Gummy, almost. Takes almost a full second to reset. I didn't take apart the trigger mechanism.
Is the problem likely just gunk needing cleaning, or is it possible that the problems go deeper than that? Is cleaning the trigger mech. something fairly straightforward on this gun, or should I take it to a smith? Hope I don't sound too ignorant- only been shooting a few years. Thanks for any info.

trigger prob,s

sounds as if the grease or oil in the mechanism hes thickenend up,remove the stock to gain access to the trigger, have a look for any obvious debri, check what the grease/oil looks like, then give it all a clean with W D 40 or some other type of thin lubricant, then wipe off any excess, dry fire the trigger ass untill trigger return is working correctly, refit your stock and good shooting.
