What I know about shotguns could be written on the back of a postage stamp so please bear with me...

Though I own quite a few firearms I only own 1 shotgun - a 12ga Stoeger SXS Coach Gun that I use for CAS.

I was wondering if one can fire slugs out of it? It's a total smoothbore so if one fires slugs is there a special kind of slug one must use? How does a slug get spin imparted to it when fired from a smoothbore barrel. From a 20" barreled Shotgun (I think the Stoeger is a 20 - might be an 18) what is the max effective range?

Yes, you can fire slugs from it. To do so effectively may take some research and testing. Many doubles will not shoot slugs from both barrels to the same point, but it's often possible to get decent accuracy from one barrel and use shot in the other. This is often called "Buck and Ball".

And sometimes people just get lucky and find a load that shoots from both barrels into 4" at 50 yards. Don't bet on it, though.

Like any other slug shotgunning, you should buy a mess of 5 packs, bench test until the tightest grouper emerges, then buyamessa that.

In smoothbores, the style of slug to AVOID is the sabots.

Both Forster(Rifled slugs) and Brenekkes will work in smoothbores. Each shotgun is a law unto itself as to what it "Likes". Since there's no ineffective slugs, just go with the most accurate.

Slugs will be effective at ranges far greater than those we can place them accurately at.

HTH....

The common type of shotgun slug you want to use in a smooth bore shotgun is called a Foster Slug. A Foster slug is a big 72 caliber round nose ball bullet that has a very hollow base and is nose heavy. The Foster slug has angled grooves around its’ side. The deep hollow base and heavy nose helps the slug stay on a straight course sort of like how a shuttle cock does. The angled groves on the side may engage the air passing by it and give the slug some spin.

The brand I have had the best luck with is cheapy PMC brand slugs.
