I own a Stoeger coach gun and was wondering if it was ok to run slugs through it. So I called Benelli and spoke to a lady in customer service who told me it was not ok and that to do so would void the warranty. When i asked why the shotgun wouldn't handle slugs, she stated that she didn't know why it wouldn't, it just wasn't "advised".

So...Why would firing slugs through it hurt it?

Fixed IC & M.
Somebody once told me that the large slugs' vibration would harm the barrels and could cause them to separate. I didn't put much stock in this guy or what his reasoning was as he was less then knowledgeable at times and I was wondering if anyone here with more insight could confirm or deny this and/or maybe shed some light on why firing slugs through it could harm the gun.

I've never heard of such a thing. People have been shooting slugs thru double guns since their invention.

I've shot slugs through my mod/full SxS no problem. Someone's fillin' you with a line of bovine excretion. :D If the barrels are regulated as most SxSs are, to cross windage at 30 yards or so, you might have to limit 'em to 50 yards for accuracy reasons. That old 12 of mine, though, shoots more like a double rifle. It's amazingly accurate at 50 yards if you can stand the recoil. Kicks harder than anything I've ever fired using slugs and that includes rifles up to .375 H&H and my 10 gauge H&R.

My little 20 gauge Spartan shoots about 4" left with the right barrel and vice versa at 50 with slugs, so I have to hold a little Kentucky windage and I would not shoot past 50 with it anyway as 20 gauge foster slugs kinda run out of juice past 50, anyway. I don't hunt with it, just carry a few slugs for if I run across a hog now and then. I thought I was going to get to use it one day, sitting there dove hunting and nothing was flying. Heard 'em squealin' and thought I'd get a shot, but they were just fighing in an oak mott and never came out of the cover. Good to have a few slugs along just in case, though.

Did you tell her the chokes were fixed, not screw-in? I ask as the screw-in's from Stoeger when not rated for steel shot, are then also not rated for slugs, and will peen themselves into the barrels, IC or Mod it won't matter, they will get stuck like nobody's business. It voids the warranty that way. It's not a cheap fix either.

How do you tell if your gun[sxs] is rated for steel shot? I thought all new guns would be ok , but maybe not. What about used guns ? I'm looking to get a double barrel used or new,but this steel shot has me worried. If it's rated for steel will slugs be ok too ?

Should say in the manual and literature. I'm sure the gun is, it's the chokes that are in question. If it's fixed choke, probably not a problem. Most any new gun is steel rated anymore. On the Spartan, just the mod and full are not steel rated. Full is worthless anyway and I found a Mod that WAS steel rated, aftermarket choke.

The coach gun and slugs just doesn't even sound good, sounds like swift recoil and poor accuracy. Just my opinion
