Are you saying that she wants/needs a non-folding knife, or no knife at all?

Does an 8yr old boy want/need a folding knife?

I was born in 1980, and had an SAK by 1985, despite coming from a liberal urban family.

Did I "need" it? I didn't save any families from burning cars, but I did have fun carving sticks, and didn't cut myself too much.

I'll see how this whole thing works out. My uncle (father to the cousins) is very traditional, pro-Americana, etc., but also somewhat traditional in terms of gender roles. I'm quite sure he thinks an 8yr old boy should have a knife, so I'll find out soon what he thinks of his daughters getting pocketknives.
