Hey guys. Im a college student at JMU in Va. Im looking for a place to hunt small game around Rockingham/August county area. I'm looking to mainly hunt coyote, bobcat, rabbit, and squirrel. It doesent really matter if its public or private land, I'm willing to pay a little bit if I can hunt all I want and its close. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks yall

Hello fellow JMU-ite,

I went to JMU myself. What are you majoring in? You need to check out the national forest going towards WV, there is some pretty good stocked trout fishing out there too. I never hunted there, as I just went home to hunt, but I did fish out there on the national forest and rode around a lot and there is some good looking territory.

One good place to hunt/fish is the Hburg resivoir. To get to it go out US-33 west like you are going to go to WV. At almost the top of the mountain there is a gravel road that cuts down to the left. In the fall you can see the lake from 33.

The other place I used to go is out towards Reddish Knob. If you don't know where Reddish Knob is, then some one there will. It is a pretty popular spot. The way I used to get to it is to go down to the bridgewater exit, then over to Rt 42 up to Dayton. Then just take Rt 257 out to the national forest. You actually take 257 out of dayton then take a left at the first stop sign towards Briery Branch. I think Briery branch was the name of the manmade lake I fished on.
Alternatively you can go out 33 west and take Clover Hill Rd to the left. There used to be a sign pointing towards Ottobine. There is a little Menonite store out 33 before you get to the Ottobine "exit" that used to sell a hotdog and drink for 50 cents.

Anyway, hope this helps. It's been a while since I lived up there but I really enjoyed the area. There is also (or was) a good gun/hunting/fishing shop on 33 west just past the junction with rt42. I forget the name.

Someone else who lives up there might chime in with better areas, if you get a good map you'll see where I'm talking about. Both of these places i'm talking about are within a 20-30 min drive.

Good Luck,
-Jon
