Don’t bother shaming me for being negligent, I am already aware. I inadvertently placed a tray of small magnum primes on top of my small standard primers. I loaded 100 rounds of 9mm with magnum primers, is this going to cause a significant problem, or should I just go ahead and pull the bullets apart and press out the magnum primers?

standard load of 5 grains of winchester Auto Comp and 124 grain round nose copper plated bullet

I saw NO difference between standard, Magnum, and rifle Primers in 9mm with HP38, except that Remington standard were a bit faster than others.
I would not worry about it.

looks like you are in the middle of the load range. i see no problem with shooting them. keep an eye out, though, just in case.

luck,

murf

many mango seasons ago i did a mag primer test vs standard primers with 9 mm, 40 s&w, 38 sp, 357 mag and 45 acp. each caliber the powder type and weight was the same the only change was the primer. over my chronograph the mag primers gave me about 50 fps more over the standard primer. now i use mag primers all the time.

Thanks everyone, kind of figured it wouldn’t be a big deal but wanted to ask other people. Thanks again

I have an unopened brick of CCI 350 and was planning to do some side-by-side testing with CCI 300 primers in 45acp. I am going to probably pick one fast powder (SportPistol), one Medium Powder (BE-86 or PowerPistol or Unique), and one slower powder (Longshot) and see what difference the primer makes at my starting loads. With SportPistol at my starting loads I seem to feel some unburnt powder when shooting, so it would be interesting to evaluate the difference.

Thanks for asking the question since I have been researching the same magnum vs standard issue for a while.

I got a free 1,000 box of LPP magnum primers a while back. had no use for it, so just stored it away

Was sorting brass one day and realized I had about 300 45ACP cases.

Primers, brass... went out and purchased a 45acp

Since that time, have not seen a difference between magnum LPP and standard at mid-ranges

My primer test was with aa#5 powder. Now I am using titegroup for my 357 mag match load with mag primers. I also use rifle mag primers on all loads.

As long as you learned to be careful, and you understand what happened, and what the impact is you’re doing great.

When I started reloading it was when things were hard to get. Being excited that primers were available I grabbed a brick of 1000. I didn’t realize they were Mangnums. Unlike you, I didn’t load them, but like what you were told I saw posts saying the speeds were slightly higher with them. I’ve also saw posts that said that they’re better than standard primers in cold, and they work better with ball primers. I’m not sure, but what I do know is that the standard advise to work up a load with them if possible is the wisest advise. But we all know we should do that with any new component.

I guess the only thing I can really add, is that you’re probably ok, but as temperatures go up, just be safe and watch for signs of over pressure. But that too is someth8ng you should be doing so please take it as just a friendly reminder!

Thanks for the warning. I have been thinking about using the magnum primers I have for a while. Since I am very cautious when it comes to reloading, I will definitely start low and it will be based on my previous testing results, thus the following statement:

My experience with small rifle primers runs to 30 Carbine and 223/5.56.

In both cases, with maximum loadings for 30 Carbine and loadings for the 223/5.56 that were (according to Hornady #4) just below maximum (Hornady #8 and later editions show that same load as above maximum), I learned that I could use CCI #400, #450, BR#4 and Winchester WSR primers interchangeably. I have never seen signs of excessive pressure with any of the primers, the differences in chronographed velocities was insignificant nor was the point of impact at 100 yards changed by the difference in the primers.

I didn’t think it was a warning, my comment was meant more of as a reminder. In any case, we all agree being safe is the top priority and you seem to have that!

I’d be interested in your results.
Please post and let us know how it goes.
