Smartcarry vs. The defender

smartcarry

IIRC the defender is a belly band right? I’ve used the smartcarry for awhile now and find it a very good holster for my various carrying needs.

Since I posted on the thread that Who Knows Who referenced things have changed in how I carry my revolver. In that thread I used the smartcarry in its usual way as shown on the smartcarry website and also used a unclemikes horizontal shoulder holster for winter and car carry since the only problem/complaint I have with the smartcarry is drawing from the seated position in a vehicle.

Since I bobbed the hammer on my SP101 I was no longer able to carry it in the horizontal shoulder holster since there was no hammer spur and I was unable to keep the gun in the holster even with the retention strap. So I came up with a couple of different ways to use my smartcarry.

First way is the conventional way as shown on the website. This is great for deep concealment and in any position other than sitting in a car I can draw my weapon very quickly.

Second position requires that you raise the smartcarry up to your beltline (same as with a bellyband) and the grip of the gun is just above your belt. Now I’m able to draw from any seated position.

Third position, which I use esp. in winter, is where I position the smartcarry across my chest between my nipple line and belly button. I don’t tighten it very tight so it doesn’t restrict my breathing. I had my SO make me some shoulder straps similar to suspenders with metal jaw clasps which I use to keep the smartcarry in place. This would be similar to a small harness. Now the gun is just to the left of my navel and since I wear button shirts mostly in the winter I just leave one button open and easily draw from my “chest holsterâ€. It’s very concealed. I’ve had my SO check me out from all angles and she can’t tell I’m carrying with this method.

So for me the smartcarry is a three-position holster and it fits my needs well.

Can't say anything regarding the first one, that link redirects my browser to a different page.

As far as the Smart Carry goes, I have one and like it a lot, especially during warmer weather. I can carry anything from a snubbie to a 4" .45, very concealable and easy to get to and draw from. I especially like it when I'm carrying around the house, or just lounging around in a pair of sweat pants.

The only draw back for me, is that the velcro straps are a little irritating, but I just wear a t-shirt under it.
