They seem to be the same thing, one just older than the other. Is there really any difference as to fit or function?

It was my understanding that they're the same product, and the company just changed its name. I could be wrong, of course.

That would be strange, as the Thunderwear web page is much nicer and cleaner. Also priced higher than Smartcarry.

And a little googling says that Smartcarry was formerly Thunderbelt. Thunderwear is in New York, patented in 1995 and Smartcarry is in Florida patent granted in 1999.

I still can't see any difference in them.

Edit:
This should be interesting. I emailed both companies and asked them to tell me what the difference was between them and their competitor :)

I almost invented the Thunderwear but I was having trouble with trying to place the gun laterally. Tom Fogarty invented Thunderwear I ordered one of the first one's from Tom only made them in white back then. Charlie Parrott invented the same product, both he and Tom have patents, but he thought the ribbon tape at the top opening of the holster could cause snags on pistols so he eliminated it. On a patent you can't add something to a patent and patent it but you can delete something from a patent and patent it. I ordered one from Charlie when I saw his come out. Both are fine products, the only problem I have had is with the end of the handle of the gun printing a little but that is all. Tips tuck your shirt in front behind the holster but in back tuck your shirt over the elastic strap that goes around your waist. I like to wear pants without a belt just an elastic waistband with mine, makes it easier to draw. See my website and video at http://www.handgunholsters.net

Oh...thunder*belt*...I must have gotten confused.

I was going to say something about carrying a pistol that close to my..."valuables", but upon further reflection, I guess that's no different from an IWB forward of the hip.

I might end up looking into these.

I sent off an email to Smartcarry asking them what the difference was between them and Thunderwear .. this is what I got back.

I suggest you read through some of the 522 customer comments we have on our website to see what our customers have to say about our holster, and below is the basic differences between SC & TW. SmartCarry® is the first and only under garment concealed carry holster that is snag free and has a 100% waterproof (sweat proof) rear panel.

The basic differences are that Thunderwear has a downward facing seam at the inside top front of the firearm pocket which can (and does) snag on any forward facing projection, such as the rear of cylinders of revolvers, the top front corner of the ejection port on any Glock for right handed people, etc. You can go to their website and see the seam in the photos of the Thunderwear holsters. SmartCarry® has a patented construction method (U.S. Utility Patent 9,505,834) which eliminates all downward facing seams in the firearm and tactical reload pockets. You can see a photo of our snag free construction @ http://www.smartcarry.com/snagfree.htm.

TW also uses diaper cloth as a moisture barrier, which absorbs perspiration and passes it right on to your gun, and nothing rusts metal faster than salty, acidic perspiration. The rear of all SmartCarry® holsters includes a piece of Cushmax®, a material which allows air to pass through, but not water, so they're 100% "sweat proof" with a completely waterproof rear panel. And we use a heavier duty denim which not only means longer holster life, but the heavier denim is much less likely to form to the contours of the gun, making drawing faster and smoother. And when you add in TW's S&H charges, you get a much better holster with SmartCarry® , and at a lower price, than with TW. If you dig through the customer comments on our website ( http://www.smartcarry.com/feedbk1.htm), you'll find some from former TW owners and their comments on the differences in the holsters. Thank you for your interest in SmartCarry®!

Regards,

Charlie

This is what I got from Thunderwear after I asked them the same thing.

We have many competitors. They all are excellent holsters.

Thunderwear is the only holster that's custom made for your handgun. For a more perfect fit. Thunderwear was first, all the others are copies of our product.

Thunderwear Holsters were developed in the late 80's with over 600,000 sold. If you want to buy the original than you'll not be disappointed with thunderwear.

Thunderwear Customer Service

Somehow, I think Smartcarry just won my business.

I was planning to buy a Thunderwear holster (the only one of that style I knew about). They had a much more extensive advertising campaign. When I hit the forums to do some general research about the style, I learned about SmartCarry and the patent disputes.

To make a long story short, I decided on the SmartCarry for all the reasons mentioned above (no downward seams, "sweat proof", etc.) Also, I really enjoyed talking with Charlie while working out the details of the order. I just liked the guy and the purchasing experience. My wife and I have each had ours for three months now, and we have no complaints!

Over the past several months I have seen quite a few comments from people who carry this style holster. I'm sure some of them used TW, but for the life of me I can't recall! Every reference I remember off hand was about the SmartCarry.

I have a Smartcarry. Charlie answered all of my questions and was very helpful. Truly, a man that stands behind his product.
