I just got back from putting a S&W 629-2 with an unfluted cylinder, 8 3/8" barrel and a nice set of wooden Hogue finger groove grips on layaway at the local Gander Mountain. It's a pre-lock :D model and probably about 90% condition or so. I'm psyched! .44 Magnums rule :). Does anyone have the blue book value for one of these? I couldn't find any info about the unfluted cylinder. I like it, but just wondered if it adds much if any to the value of the revolver. This is in NW PA BTW, in case that helps. Also, does anyone have a favorite holster for one of these? I'm going to take it deer hunting next year and will need a good rig. Thanks!

Well, that wasn't quite the answer I was looking for. :( Apparently there was a run of Lew Horton 629 Classic Hunters in 1990, but I couldn't find out if they had unfluted cylinders and were -2E models. I just e-mailed Smith and Wesson to see if they could help, I'll update once I hear back from them. Thanks for the help Standing Wolf.

Oh, wait a minute!

I misread your post! I saw "model 29" rather than "model 629." My mistake. Sorry!

A model 629-2 wouldn't surprise me at all. I have a 629-5 with an unfluted cylinder and three-inch barrel. I believe it took Smith & Wesson quite awhile to think to issue somewhat odd revolvers and charge extra for them, but by the 1990s, the company was doing short runs of all manner of non-standard guns.

As for the value: I'm not convinced models with unfluted cylinders are actually worth more. They may be of some extra value to collectors—or not, depending upon the number made. I like them because it's possible to have the cylinders engraved. That said™, holsters for guns with unfluted cylinders are a bother to find.

Sorry for the confusion!

Ah! Well all right then, looks like the story adds up. The salesman said they took it in recently, apparently the seller thought it was "too much gun" and never shot it much. Such a thing as "too much gun" is impossible IMO. ;)

Does anyone have facts on revolvers?

Hi I'm new to shooting and I want to learn a bit more about revolvers! What got me interested in shooting was learning about Annie Oakley:) and the fact that my dad shoots.:D

Sincerly,

629-5

Hi Kurt M,
I also own a 629 unfluted 8 3/8 Smith. I bought mine several years ago, from local gun store, they said was an over run that was ordered by a silhouette club. The only difference is mine is 629-5 and has a muzzle brake built in.
Here is picture of it. Also it is one of my alltime favorite guns, you will love it.

Are you sure that isn't a 7.5 inch barrel? I have one that *looks* just like it with a 7.5 inch barrel.

I'm also looking for a leather belt holster that is somewhat closely boned to the gun (with the unfluted cylinder), has enough room for the length of barrel, and covers the grip area with a snapping flap. I tried to email http://simplyrugged.com/3.html these guys and got no answer. I also tried to see if http://www.action-direct.com/rlm21.html this one could be built to my specs, but haven't been able to talk to the right people at Ross. They are hard to find as the website I listed is just a distributer and I can't find a website for them.

All in all - these are great guns. I took my first deer with a handgun this year using this S&W. With the standard sights at about 35 yards! What a great time!

Yes you are right Winchester62 it is a 7 1/2 in barrell. Glad to hear you got a deer with yours. Mine is a great shooter also.
Thanks for the reply.

Cool! If you ever come across the perfect hunting holster, let me know.:)

Kurt,
Sounds to me that you may have the 629-2 Classic Hunter.. though the grips are throwing me. Only 2500 made (in 1989) and i believe they all came as mine did with Hogue rubber grips.
Is yours a full lug?
Mine is an amazingly accurate gun and I think you will find yours very useful for hunting. Re: holsters I have a Tom Threepersons by El Paso Saddelry and though a bit expensive it sure looks and feels strong and stylish.
Can you post a pic of your gun?

I saw a 629 of some sort in a local store this Sat with thhe unfluted cylinder for like low 5's. I though it was a fair deal and I just assumed it was a Lew Horton deal of soke sort. I like unfluted cylinders but I do not own a single revolver so equiped as of yet.

longarm, unfortunately I can't post a pic as it's still on layaway. :( I should be able to pick it up after the first of the year though. Oh, and it does have a full lug barrel. Thank you for the holster suggestion as well. I e-mailed Smith and Wesson and described the revolver, they said that it sounds like a Classic Hunter made in the early '90's. :)
