Recently picked up one of these with apparently very little use for what I thought was a pretty good price and took it out for a test drive. 150 rounds of different hardball without any problems and pretty good accuracy which will get better as I get used to it. I have searched the web and all the gun sites that I am aware of but there seems to be very little info on this pistol...anyone have any comments or tips or anything of use ? Thanks.

Is that the one that has the 4516 slide on a 4506 frame? If so, there was something posted about it over at the S&W Forum sometime in the last month.

Neat that your new gun works great! :)

And welcome to THR! :D

I honestly don't know about the frame/slide designation...I did a search at the S&W forum and don't recall that info but will give it another try. Yes it is neat when a new(used) gun works like it should right from the get-go....especially if it is to be used as a carry piece which this will be.

Thanks for the welcome , have been lurking for some time now and love the sight.

When my department transitioned from revolvers to semi-automatics ther chief chose S&W 4586's for both uniform and detective use. My experence over several years was they were relatively trouble free and forgiving pistols. Forgiving in that some of the officers did not do routine cleaning on them, including magazines. They are smaller than 4506's and larger than 4516's and as usual with any comprimise have their shortcomings, but relailabilty wasdn't one of them. My department recently went to Glock .45's which are significantly larger, but lighter than the S&W's, and as with any change of equipment, some like them and some don't. When we changed I bought my 4586.

If standard S&W numbering holds true a 4586 is a DAO with a 4.25" barrel and full size grip.

Congrats on your purchace, I have a 4576 (frame decocker, 4.25" barrel) and it is a neat pistol. I like it a heck of a lot more than my SIG 220.

Thanks for the replies guys....good stuff. On the mag well and one mag is electo-penciled MOTP and I did a web search just to see what, if anything it would produce in the way of law enforcement abbreviations. I discovered that there is a small township just outside of Flint, MI named Montrose. Well I called the township PD and spoke to the receptionist who told me that about two years ago they did indeed turn in their issue S&W 4586 pistols...she said there were no problems with the pistols, just a department change.

Kindof neat to find out background infomation on a weapon.....at least I think so.

The 4586 is an awesome gun! I've had mine for over 10 years. I carried it for several years as a primary gun as well as a duty gun in my reserve job. I have over 10,000 rds thru it and the only problem I ever had with it was the ejector broke at about 7,000 rds. it never gagged on any ammunition regardless of the size/shape of the hollowpoint. Of those rounds, probably half were +P. It's a good, strong, reliable gun that will give you many years of fun/service if it's routinely maintained.

Congrats on the purchase. I bought my 4586 a couple of years ago and have become quite fond of it. Mine was also an LEA trade in, in very nice shape, and priced where I couldn't pass it up at just $300. It came from Idaho in the Boise area, but I don't know whether it was one of their State police issues or a local department.

Personally, I've become a big fan of the DAO trigger system they use on it. It's the easiest to learn to shoot accurately and quickly with that I've yet run across. The lack of 'second strike' capability hasn't been an issue, as I've yet to have a malf of any sort with it.

The only things I've changed are a new recoil spring (routine for me with any used semi-auto) and replace the dimming tritium sights with a fresh set. It came with a Hogue grip and two spare mags.

I consider it to be one of the best values for the price that I've ever gotten. It's in my nightstand drawer loaded with 230 gr. Gold Dots, right next to the Streamlight.

I used to have the 4586 as an issue duty gun. I liked it, and wish I was still allowed to carry it on duty. It had a lot of nice features: fully dehorned, beveled mag well, big fixed Novak night sights, undercut trigger guard, serrated front strap, nice wide grip tang, choice of backstrap configuration, reliable 8 shot mags, stainless construction, slim and easy to carry off duty in a custom pancake, and most importantly it shot big bullets. A much better gun, IMO, than the plastic minor caliber POS they replaced it with.
