Smith and Wesson Baby Russian (?) information

I am trying to locate some information about an old S&W that belongs to my grandfather. From google image search, it appears to be called a 1st Model, and nicknamed "Baby Russian". At least that is the closest thing i have found to it. I need to get a closer look, but I could not find any serial number or any other markings on it at all. Where should I look for the serial number? Any other information would be helpful as well.

Your picture is of a 38 Single Action Model No.2 1st Model. Made 1877-1891. The term "Baby Russian" is sometimes used to refer to both the First and Second Model 38 Single Action. It properly refers to the the First Model which has a longer under barrel ejector housing.

Patent dates should be on top of the barrel. Sn should be on the butt.

Any chance you know how to open the action? I can't do anything besides cock the hammer...

Lift up the latch at the rear of the barrel. It is just ahead of the hammer. You may have to ease back the hammer to do this (do not cock).

Actually, it is the Model 2 Second issue or the .38 Single Action Second Model.* The First Issue/First Model is the one usually called the Baby Russian, but that gun is also sometimes called that also.

Unless something is stuck or rusted, that gun should open regardless of the hammer position.

* The difference is between what a maker called a gun and what collectors call it for their own convenience.

I'll give that a try tomorrow. Grandpa is just trying to see how much it is worth, so i'm trying to find out anything I can about it.

Those guns are interesting, but with over 100,000 made, they are neither rare nor very valuable. Like brand new, in the box, one could bring $700 or more, but I am afraid that the one pictured is in very poor condition and it might bring, at retail, only about $100-150, less if it is not functional (parts broken or missing, or heavy internal rust).
