Smith and Wesson Warranty

They may not have the "lifetime warranty" like some others, but they take care of you. I've never needed it but I've read good things on different gun forums.

Same for Ruger, and they don't have any warranty per se.

Um, they do, and they've had it much longer than most makers. I believe that any new gun since about 1988 came with a lifetime warranty to the original owner. It is covered on their website.
 
S&W is great

I have bought serveral new and used revolvers and for one reason or another have had to use S&W for service. Such as a 1961 built M29 that I bought in 1978. I broke a part and they replaced it for free. This was about 2000.
They are great.
 
Obtained a kinda broke model 65. Sent it back to get fixed, they were baffled and embarrassed, saying it couldn't be fixed, and so offered to sell me the next closest similar model at a deeply discounted price (the 619), I went with the 620 instead (adj. sights, 7-shot L-frame), and they took care of everything ASAP.

Bought a 638, noticed what appeared to be a manufacturing defect along the cylinder; got ahold of them and they sent me a mailing label ASAP, and turned the gun around with a completely replaced cylinder in....maybe 14 days? Would've been sooner, but it was right after they reopened after the Christmas rush of '08.

Their warranty seems spot-on to me, and I have no complaints. If any of the above would otherwise be used as a bash of S&W's QC, it's not--I'm just lucky at finding the one firearm with problems, no matter what it happens to be :/

Sorry I was referring to non-original owners.

Please don't ever compare a Ruger and a Smith warranty. The Smith and Wesson warranty is a lifetime warranty to the original owner. Great I'm sure if you plan on buying new and keeping forever. Used guns get no service.

Ruger will basically fix any Ruger you send to them, no matter what's wrong, when it was made, or who bought it.
 
Warranty works

Smith's Warranty seems mighty fine to me.

I had a 'timing' issue with my 629. Called 'em up.

They never asked if I bought it new... they shipped me a label and returned it 'better than new' inside two weeks (post-election-day-rush).

I have many others. Just ordered a 0.500 trigger for a K frame. They took my order, and that was that.

Called them about a Model '1917' of '1922' of 1937 that I have. They politely explained that they don't warranty 'pre-1956' firearms. I believe 1956 is when they started using the model numbers in their firearms.

If you have 'an older' gun, that needs some work, that's likely seen a lot of use, why not just pay for it. You'd pay for new brakes on your car, or a transmission that's worn out?

Believe me, I'm all for free where it's due, but I'm not part of the 'entitlement' group that wants everything given to them.

There's lots of good parts for S&W floating around out there. I recommend a good gunsmith for most folks...

A little research online will get you a good idea of what's available, parts wise.

IMHO on 'modern' firearms that are just 'plain worn out' and dangerous ... I guess they'd offer you a decent upgrade path rather than risk the liability, and it sounds like that's the case.
