GLOCK. Why? 33rd mags std option
I looked at these the hardest for my recent purchase for first handgun. I liked the feel of the M&P full size, personally didn't shoot it as well as I did the Glock 19. I thought the 17 was too big, although the full size M&P is actually bigger, but feels better. I really liked the M&P-C, but since I didn't get to rent one, couldn't tell you how it shoots, and couldn't bring myself to buy one, since I could shoot the others, and the G19 shot the best for me.
As for other differences...
M&P has ambidextrious (spelling?) slide/mag release I believe.
M&P has optional 'mag safety' that you may not want, make sure you don't buy one of those if you don't want that.
M&P-C has accessory rail, unlike Glock 26, although the Glock 19 isn't much bigger than the M&P-C and has rail.
Currently probably more accessories for all the Glocks. Did I mention 33rd mags as a std option?
M&P good quality, but this specific newer design maybe not as proven as Glocks by some people's standards.
Glocks are especially liked in the 9MM by even people who don't like Glocks.
Does M&P have a 22 conversion like the Glocks? May be interesting to someone wanting to shoot cheap ammo, or train a new shooter.
Both S&W and Glock 9MM series share mags within their family.
For me, the G19 was the perfect all around size/multi purpose gun. If I ever had trouble carrying it, after I get my CCW, then I could always opt for the smallest of the lot, the 26, but I've carried the 19 around the house, and done IDPA w/ it, and had no problems. I liked how I'm several hundred rounds into the G19 w/ out a single issue. Not slamming the M&P at all, but a couple threads on here have noted a couple problems, but S&W service was always well regarded.
As far as size goes, in case you hadn't handled them side by side, or researched it to this level of detail... I posted these sizes in another thread, FWIW:
Largest to smallest regarding these models, directly pasted from Glock and SW Web sites I knew all of this from looking at this info before comparing the G19 to the M&P and the G26 to the M&PC, but when I went to paste this, I was surprised at the G17 being so close to the M&P and slightly smaller, but I know the others definitely feel the way they're measured:
S&W M&P 9 MM
Overall Length: 7.5"
Overall Height: 5.5"
Width: 1.2"
Glock 17 (9 MM)
LENGTH - 186 mm / 7.32 in.
HEIGHT - 138 mm / 5.43 in.
WIDTH - 30 mm / 1.18 in.
Glock 19 (9 MM)
LENGTH - 174 mm / 6.85 in.
HEIGHT - 127 mm / 5.00 in.
WIDTH - 30 mm / 1.18 in.
S&W M&P Compact 9 MM
Overall Length: 6.7"
Overall Height: 4.3"
Width: 1.2"
Glock 26 (9MM)
LENGTH - 160 mm / 6.29 in.
HEIGHT - 106 mm / 4.17 in.
WIDTH - 30 mm / 1.18 in.
See the comparison chart of glocks at
http://www.glock.com/english/index_pistols.htm then click 'Models' to see the grid of sizes, and see comparable 'compact' models to the 19, and comparable models to the 'sub-compact' 26
FWIW, I think the M&P series contours makes it feel a little smaller than it is, though. But lining them up side by side, seems to reflect the measurements above...
