I have been needin a high capacity nine back in my collection for a while. Dad was given my 5906 for a house gun and a friend wanted my 92 berretta really bad- badly enough that he traded me even up for a garand that was accurized and used in high power... how could I say no? So anyhow I am leanin toward the glock in a 17 or 19 and want one sometime this spring/summer before the dems do thier thing.

So the question is does the smith M&P offer anything other than bein american made to interest me above the golck?

I will be using this for a ccw, truck, house gun and general "beater"

I also have plenty of others in different calibres bigger and smaller. This need is just for the high cap nine between the two choices I asked about.

Kudo's to those who own both and can give real advice ;)
Thanks in advance

The M&P offers no advantage in design, materials or workmanship over the Glock.

You may find that it "feels" better or "looks" better and if that is more important to you than design quality then buy the M&P.

The M&P offers no advantage in design, materials or workmanship over the Glock.

the real question is then- is the M&P quality/workmanship the same as or less than the glock?

If it offers no advantage in quality or workmanship - does it offer any disadvantage?

If the M&P feels better, buy it. Otherwise, buy the Glock.

Do you want to CCW regularly, compete, or use the pistol as a range-gun and nightstand gun? Either the 17 or 19 will work, check which one fits your hand better. I have a 17, and it is a little big, but I can CCW it and do all of the above with very little compromise. Well, okay, it's a BIG piece for me to CCW.

The ergos are completely different and the M&P wins easily IMO and looks better too. Right now, the M&P mags are close to double what glock mags cost. There is no more need for glock grip reductions to make them fit right, just get an M&P instead.

For what it's worth, if everything else is equal, i'd pick the S&W because it's made right here the good ole' US of A.

I own two M&PS in 9mm. The ergos are light years better than the Glock (IMO) AND design wise the loaded chamber indicator cut into the top of the barrel all but eliminates certain types of KABOOMS that can happen in Glocks AND they have a fully supported chamber. Two design advantages. The Glock does have the edge as a proven and reliable design but the design of the two pistols is so similar I think it would really break down to personal taste. I do prefer the design of the trigger safety lever on the trigger of the Glock over the design on the M&P. Another advantage is the totally LOADED aftermarket on Glock sights, holsters, parts, or whatever you want. S&W has a lot of catching up to do in that regard.

Oh, and the Glock 26 is really a bit smaller than a M&P compact. The difference is minimal but it is there. Glock also offers a full size, mid size, and subcompact so the selection is a bit more varied.

the S&W mags being 2x the price is a BIG NEGATIVE if its true....

I am not sure how a loaded chamber indicator eliminates KB's ?

You can buy new glock mags for $16-$17 each if you look around. New M&P mags run between $30-$35 each. The price situation may get better, but lots of people are buying and liking M&Ps so the mag demand is up.

EDIT: if anyone knows of a lower price source for M&P mags, post it!

Glocks are near and dear to my heart. I have a G19, G22, and G26. I love them and shoot them regularly.

With that being said, I also own an M&P and it fits my hand so much better. I shoot it more than my Glocks. The 9mm has virtually no recoil and the ergonomics are spectacular.

M&P's are a little cheaper right now in my area. My LGS had them for $399 for awhile. I think they have gone back up now though. My M&P has been nothing but a joy. No problems at all. Mag prices bite, but it is what it is.

Not to be a certified fence-rider (yeeee-haw), but I doubt you would be disappointed in either purchase.

With great jealously of your Garand,
tydephan

If the M&P feels better, buy it.
I would qualify this... my Glock's grip is not my most comfortable pistol but it does make me more consistent... the angular grip forces my hand into the exact same position every time increasing my accuracy... I'm not sure I could get the same consistency with an oval cross-sectioned grip, even if it's comfortable. Ergonomics are important... but only as they lend to accuracy and shooting.

That said, if the opportunity arises, I really would like to try the M&P9C....

if anyone knows of a lower price source for M&P mags, post it!
If you're buying new, get the M&P9 with the Carry Package which comes with a cheap holster and an extra magazine for $30... sorta saves you money if you want both the holster and mag.

Other factors being roughly comparable, "feels better" is a very important factor in my opinion.

They're both excellent guns... each offering something a little different. Personally, I shoot a Glock 29 (compact 10mm) and a S&W M&P 40Compact. I love both guns. But honestly, if the M&P came in 10mm, I'd probably prefer it to the Glock 29. Much as I like my Glock 29, the M&P has a fit and feel in the hand that the Glock can't come anywhere close to... and the way the gun fits one's hand is a significant factor in choosing a gun in my view. I also like the fact that the chamber is fully supported in the M&P. Yes, mags are more expensive, but how many mags do you really need to buy? Over time, the mag costs should come down.... they're in huge demand right now. Glock has more aftermarket goodies, but unless you can't find what you need for the M&P, I don't see that as a big factor. I'm thrilled with my M&P just as it came from the factory (now that the trigger has a few hundred rounds of smoothing on it!) Whereas I wanted to change a number of things on my Glock 29 (KKM fully supported barrel, 3.5# LWD connector, Pearce grip extenders, etc.)

I think you would be well served by either gun, but holding and shooting them will probably be what makes your mind up.

There's a forum dedicated to the M&P autos (MP-Pistol.com)... if you go that route, try to get a new one, there have been a number of revisions in the latest models that improve reliability.

(of course, also check out the trouble-shooting section to see what "common" issues arise to help you select a gun without problems)

I have both and have put a couple thousand rounds thru both with nary a hiccup in either. Maybe my imagination, but the M&P seems to have a tad less recoil... FWIW. You could flip a coin or hold both and see which feels better to you. I like them both... which is why I own both.:)

I have a Glock 19 and a M&P 9mm compact. The Glock is now on duty guarding my safe. The Smith has better grip feel, pointing, sights and trigger and has functioned 100% perfectly from round one. There is nothing really wrong with the Glock - this is just the natural result of 15+ years of technology and development catching up.

It should be noted that the M&P compact is really closer in size to the G26 than the G19.

Get the Glock 19. It's the best made most reliable 9mm ever mad IMHO. My local indoor range has many Glocks and only a few S&W Polymers because the Glocks are more requested and require less maintainence.

GLOCK. Why? 33rd mags std option

I looked at these the hardest for my recent purchase for first handgun. I liked the feel of the M&P full size, personally didn't shoot it as well as I did the Glock 19. I thought the 17 was too big, although the full size M&P is actually bigger, but feels better. I really liked the M&P-C, but since I didn't get to rent one, couldn't tell you how it shoots, and couldn't bring myself to buy one, since I could shoot the others, and the G19 shot the best for me.

As for other differences...

M&P has ambidextrious (spelling?) slide/mag release I believe.

M&P has optional 'mag safety' that you may not want, make sure you don't buy one of those if you don't want that.

M&P-C has accessory rail, unlike Glock 26, although the Glock 19 isn't much bigger than the M&P-C and has rail.

Currently probably more accessories for all the Glocks. Did I mention 33rd mags as a std option?

M&P good quality, but this specific newer design maybe not as proven as Glocks by some people's standards.

Glocks are especially liked in the 9MM by even people who don't like Glocks.

Does M&P have a 22 conversion like the Glocks? May be interesting to someone wanting to shoot cheap ammo, or train a new shooter.

Both S&W and Glock 9MM series share mags within their family.

For me, the G19 was the perfect all around size/multi purpose gun. If I ever had trouble carrying it, after I get my CCW, then I could always opt for the smallest of the lot, the 26, but I've carried the 19 around the house, and done IDPA w/ it, and had no problems. I liked how I'm several hundred rounds into the G19 w/ out a single issue. Not slamming the M&P at all, but a couple threads on here have noted a couple problems, but S&W service was always well regarded.

As far as size goes, in case you hadn't handled them side by side, or researched it to this level of detail... I posted these sizes in another thread, FWIW:

Largest to smallest regarding these models, directly pasted from Glock and SW Web sites I knew all of this from looking at this info before comparing the G19 to the M&P and the G26 to the M&PC, but when I went to paste this, I was surprised at the G17 being so close to the M&P and slightly smaller, but I know the others definitely feel the way they're measured:

S&W M&P 9 MM
Overall Length: 7.5"
Overall Height: 5.5"
Width: 1.2"

Glock 17 (9 MM)
LENGTH - 186 mm / 7.32 in.
HEIGHT - 138 mm / 5.43 in.
WIDTH - 30 mm / 1.18 in.

Glock 19 (9 MM)
LENGTH - 174 mm / 6.85 in.
HEIGHT - 127 mm / 5.00 in.
WIDTH - 30 mm / 1.18 in.

S&W M&P Compact 9 MM
Overall Length: 6.7"
Overall Height: 4.3"
Width: 1.2"

Glock 26 (9MM)
LENGTH - 160 mm / 6.29 in.
HEIGHT - 106 mm / 4.17 in.
WIDTH - 30 mm / 1.18 in.

See the comparison chart of glocks at http://www.glock.com/english/index_pistols.htm then click 'Models' to see the grid of sizes, and see comparable 'compact' models to the 19, and comparable models to the 'sub-compact' 26

FWIW, I think the M&P series contours makes it feel a little smaller than it is, though. But lining them up side by side, seems to reflect the measurements above...

If you buy a new S&W sigma pistol, they're giving away a $30 rebate or 2 free magazines, your choice. I know they're different weapons than the M&P but I just thought I'd bring that up seeing someone was discussing the price of mags and such.

It does look nice but I'd have to shoot one first.

Glocks and Smiths are both fine guns. The advantage goes to the one that feels best and most natural in your hand.

I have been customizing the Glocks for a long time and have just recently started customizing the M&P. I like the trigger and what you can do with it on the M&P you can get it to break similar to a 1911 trigger because it has a sear. I think from a reliability stand point I would have to give the glock the nod.

I have attached photos of a glock and an M&P that I have recently completed.
