Greetings All,

I'm a newbie with a few questions about a revolver I received from my dad.

It's a Smith model 10-5 .38 special with a 4" barrel and nickel finish. It's serial # is D950981. With the exception of some blacking on the barrel end of the cylinder, the thing looks new.

My first question relates to the stamp on the barrel which says "CTG." What does that mean?

Secondly, I'm wondering when it was made. I'm not sure when my dad bought the gun, but I don' think it's that old.

Lastly, what is the value of said gun? I don't think I'd ever sell it, but I should at least include it in the home insurance.

Thanks in advance!

Jay

CTG is an abreviation for "CarTridGe". As for the rest you could call S&W and get the manufacture date. As for the value that is speculative. Personally I would say since it was from your Dad it has more sentimental value than monetary value so just enjoy and take care of it. The S&W model 10 in any configuration is one gun that every collector should have in my opinion.

Without seeing the gun any value estimates are nothing but a guess. That said, my guess would be about $250 to $300. The value is mainly determined by the overall condition and especially the condition of the nickel finish.

You should know that many of the common gun cleaners and solvents will strip that nickel finish right off the gun. I can't remember off hand which gun cleaners are "nickel friendly" but someone here should know.

Thanks very much, kind sirs. I appreciate the heads up on the nickel.

Dates to 1976 or 1977

According to "the book", it dates to 76 or 77, but leans to 1977.

As far as price goes, I recently received a colt Huntsman .22 that my Dad had since the late 50s or early 60s. He died about 2 months ago, and as the silly Master Card ads are fond of stating... it is "priceless" to me.

Keep it forever, as it sounds like you are planning. You won't be sorry.
