No longer in Nebraska, No longer a farmer.
I've been trying to find one of these ever since I got in to handguns six or seven years ago. Last week I finally got tired of looking and made an impulse buy on GB, I'm very glad I did. Today I took it out to the range, wow what a sweet shooter. No recoil, trigger is nice and smooth, sights are decent (I just ordered a fiber optic front sight). My favorite part of the day was a 3" group of .22 shorts at 25 yards from the bench. I think I put 600 rounds through it, my finger was sore near the end.

I was considering a Taurus or Ruger .22 but have to say I don't regret the Smith, even though the price of admission was a tough pill to swallow :)

You'll soon forget that price of admission and still have that gun for a very long time. I was lucky enough to get one a couple of years ago and it's great. Takes a lot of time to clean, IMHO, but it's well worth it!

Probably one of the best .22 revolvers out there. i have a 617-0 and would be very unlikely to part with it. And that's one reason they are pricey.... owners just don't let them go. As you noted, prices are high, and climbing. But I can guarantee that should you decide to sell it, unlikely as it may be, you'll more than get your money back.

I bought one about 2 years ago. Great gun and lots of fun to shoot.

I bought some 10 round speed loaders and one of the fitted otter box units with the loading block inside. Makes it more funner.

With good quality .22 LR, that gun should shoot even better.

Jim

That has always been one of my "gonna get one day" guns. I think those grips are awesome too. Congrats!

I have a Ruger SP101 in 22lr. It's alight, but I find myself looking at 617's and K-22's a lot lately. Guess I'm a Smith man.

Took me along time to cough up the cash but I'm glad I did. Mine's a 4" and It'll stay in the collection. As has been said, you'll soon forget the price paid.

Thanks nebraska_farmer, now I'm going to have to reconsider a 617-3 I've been eyeing without buying for a while :(

Congrats though, that's a beauty, and 3" at 25 yards is outstanding in my book.

Ya dun good!

Why carry .357 to shoot .22? The only rationale was that in old days they carried K-framed .38s specials and could practice affordably with gun that felt the same as service side arm. Today it makes zero sense. Ruger makes nice stainless .22 that is not much larger then old S&W .22 Kit Gun.

It actually makes perfect sense to those who understand... if you do not I feel sorry for you and those like you... :p

They are easier to shoot than the smaller guns- they a joy to shoot and accurate. The quality and memories of youth or appreciation of the history... many reasons actually.

Your lack of understanding is what makes zero sense :p

Like many I took them for granted as a youth- heck ruger 22's were cheap and accurate with more shots :D and my smith 41 was my second gun as a kid so It took me many years to get the couple 22 k frames I have and they were all acquired later - I was always busy getting other stuff first... then like most most once once I got a k frame 22 I wonderd how we lived without one? :D

That is if you like Steel revolvers and .22lr or shorts etc...

Here's my 617-6:

The deposits around the forcing cone scrape off easily. It's a lot of fun.

BTW I no long have the "Learning About Money" placemat since clearly it was ineffective.

I concur....you have one of the finest 22s available....which unlike so many other cheap 22s in the market....will retain its value....if not increase..even as a used gun!...congratulations...

A K-frame .22LR is a wonderful thing. I've never had a 617, preferring the older 17's but I surely miss that 648 I foolishly traded.

CraigC...I have one of those M17 you posted a pic of....bought it in 1975....back when S&W wore that deep polished blue....mine has the TT-TH..still wears the factory target grips...retired it when I bought the 617...

Seems like mine is from the early `80's. Not quite as nice as the earlier guns and the 18 is more accurate. I killed a lot of small game with that 6" though!

The simple answer is I like S&W revolvers, period, end of story.
