Smith & Wesson Introduces New .50 Caliber Magnum Revolver

I've had the privilege of shooting the BFR

Why, in .45/70, of course.:D I was scared to touch it off, but it really wasn't that bad. It's far more comfortable to shoot than a .44 MG with any factory load. Then, it's owner advised me that I'd shot his stepped-up handloads, and he handed over a single Federal factory load for me to shoot. That was as comfortable as .38s in a K-frame or .44 Special in the MG.

I can't say I wan't one, but I won't shy away from the opportunity to shoot the new maggie if I can.:)

The BFR .45-70 has mild ballistics compared to the S&W .50... alot of velocity is lost with the shorter barrel compared to a .45-70 rifle, or even a Contender. I wouldn't be so eager to try one. But hey, do what you like. ;)

Dumb!

They are hoping the first time neophyte will bite on the thing.

Dumb!

I'm not bitter, I just really can't understand the thought process that developed it or the people that want one. Bigger isn't always better, after a certain point.
Anyone that wants to buy one go ahead. More power to ya. Have fun pistol whipping yourself :neener:

redneck, I couldn't help but to laugh myself silly with this posting... "bigger isn't always better...." "if all else fails Get a BIGGERj hammer!"...
anyway on a serious note the 500 is not all that punishing to shoot, I shot 70 rds of 400 and 440gr, isn't wasn't a day in the park, but I've been abused much worse with some handload 44 mags. from a 4" 29.

A .500 Magnum CARRY GUN??

At the SHOT Show, S&W showed a .500 Magnum with a three-inch barrel!!!

Better be wearing your asbestos gloves when you touch that one off.

I liked it.

Most .454 and .44 hand guns do not weigh 70-80oz.

Also - there is a difference between "felt recoil" and recoil energy.

A larger, heavier gun is going to accellerate slower than a lighter gun and the energy transfer is going to be slower and less unpleasant.

I would honestly, seriously consider getting one of these for hunting boar (and whatever else).

I would probably shoot medium to light loads, but I think the .50 diameter is just going to work better on heavy game.

I had read 500swmags posts on the S&W forum and I believe him when he says it was manageable. It would be fun to shoot a cylinder or two each range trip and I can see that it could have very serious applications in handgun silhouette competition.

Now - I am 6'5" and over 300lbs and I have very very large hands. I think this gun is proportioned just right for someone like me :)

500swmag - you guys should make a .500 special that shoots a 300gr slug at 800-1000 fps out of a 3" tube. Now THAT would be something :)

Out of a BFR in .450 Marlin with a 10" tube, you can shoot a 350 grain bullet @ 1814 fps for 2557 ft-pnds of energy. That is a rifle load, not a cor-bon load tailored for a short barrel. I'm sure that cor-bon or a good handloader could beat that by a wide margin. You could also duplicate that load in a 45/70 BFR if you wanted to.

Remember, If you buy a new S&W product, you are no different morally than the French. Either way, you are supporting our nation's enemies, and eating smelly cheese while waving a white flag.

Generally true, but with this brute, the numbers are off the chart. I ran the specs through my ballistics program for the "medium" 400gr Corbon load (1675 fps, 2500 ft/lbs) and this is what it showed:

36.99 ft/lbs recoil energy

21.83 ft/sec recoil velocity

By contrast, a 190 grainer fired from a 12-lb 300wm rifle generates about 16 ft/lbs of recoil, with 9.24 ft/sec recoil velocity.

So, this puppy has more than twice the recoil energy of a 300 win mag rifle, and will be recoiling back at your head at 15 miles per hour. It will cover the distance from your hands to your face in the time it takes to blink. Literally.

As someone else said.... holy googly moogly. :what:

Heavy or not, this gun is going to recoil plenty fast.

Or is the German government censoring it? Does the active link show up for anyone?

Yeeeeeees...I'm just going to guess it's a case of outdated link rather than zee Germans censoring anything.

You can probably find more information on the S&W 500 elsewhere, starting with www.google.com
