Smith & Wesson Model 17-1 8 3/8" Serial Number Question

I have a S&W Model 17-1, 4 screw , Nickel , 8 3/8 " barrel made in 1961, and the serial number on the bottom of the barrell is six digits followed by 2 Stars ???
What does the 2 stars indicate ???

The gun is nickel finish but my book does not show Nickel finish for that year and model ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

The star means a factory rework. It looks like yours has been back to the factory twice. If the star is under the nickel it's a safe bet that the nickel finish is not original, it may be the reason for one of the stars.
