Ostensibly they set up a factory, relatively high-tech, in Turkey, to make them.
As many of us know, the Turks can make a great-looking gun, and a well-balanced gun. However, talk with people who have owned Turkish break-actions, and you will hear a lot of stories of guns that break WAY too soon in their shooting lives. Most shotgunners with some years under their belts wouldn't buy the Turkish guns available on the market now, due to years of bad experiences they've had or seen.
What I'm guessing S&W wanted to do was harness the proven ability of Turkish gunmakers to make nice guns, but make sure that what was going
into those guns wasn't so failure-prone.
The S&W SxS guns are beautiful and, for what they are, inexpensive. What they aren't is
proven. They haven't been around long enough for anyone to know how long they'll last.
They may well be
great. However, there's simply no track record. You decide what you think of that. S&W DID spend a bunch of money to set up that plant; despite the purists' dislike for some current S&W features and components, S&W doesn't make junk here in the states.
I'm liking Franchi SxS guns lately... When and if I get some money again...
And Ugartecheas are looking good, too...
